In this week's edition of Technique Tuesday we explore an art style that brought portraits to the masses , opening a new chapter of accessible art. Our base prompt looks like this : A detailed Victorian silhouette cutting in black paper with three dimensional depth , depicting (subject) (modifier), on clean white paper Victorian silhouette cutting is an art of shadows, where a few deft movements of the scissors can preserve the likeness of a person with startling intimacy. A curve of the forehead, the slope of a nose, the sweep of a hairstyle, the delicate frill of a collar. Each detail emerges from a sheet of dark paper, transforming an empty outline into a portrait. There are no painted eyes to meet our gaze, no blush of colour to suggest warmth or emotion. Instead, personality lives in the smallest distinctions: the tilt of a head, the proud set of a chin, the graceful line of a shoulder. Against a pale background, the finished figure seems to hover between presence and absence, as though a fleeting shadow has been caught and persuaded to stay. It is an art of extraordinary restraint, where the smallest cut can make all the difference between a likeness and a stranger. Though silhouette portraiture reached the height of its popularity before the Victorian era, the nineteenth century helped secure its place as a cherished part of everyday life. Its origins stretch back to eighteenth century Europe, when profile portraits became fashionable among aristocrats and the growing middle class alike. At a time when painted miniatures were expensive and photography had yet to become widely accessible, silhouettes offered an elegant and affordable way to preserve a likeness. Their name is traditionally associated with Étienne de Silhouette, a French finance minister whose surname became a byword for economy. What began as a practical alternative to costly portraiture soon developed its own artistic identity. Silhouettes travelled between friends and lovers, found places in family albums and became keepsakes of people whose faces might otherwise fade from memory. Among the most celebrated practitioners of the nineteenth century was Augustin Edouart, a French-born artist whose remarkable skill brought silhouette cutting to a wide audience in Britain and America. Edouart moved beyond the familiar head and shoulders portrait, often capturing his sitters as full-length figures whose clothing, posture, and personal belongings revealed something of their character. A gentleman's walking stick, the fall of a woman's skirt, or the distinctive angle of a hat became part of the story. Other artists, including John Miers and John Field, helped refine the tradition, producing elegant profiles on paper and other pale surfaces, sometimes enhanced with delicate painted details. Their work demanded an unusual combination of observation and confidence. Unlike a drawing, which can be adjusted with another line or softened with a stroke of shading, a cut-paper portrait leaves little room for correction. Every movement must be deliberate. The artist has to understand the shape of a face, anticipate the rhythm of the scissors, and recognize which details matter most. In the hands of a skilled cutter, this apparent simplicity becomes a quiet demonstration of mastery. As photography became increasingly accessible during the nineteenth century, the silhouette gradually lost its role as an everyday alternative to painted portraiture. The camera could preserve far more detail, capturing the features and expressions that a silhouette deliberately leaves unseen. But the craft never entirely disappeared. Its distinctive elegance, its modest materials, and its ability to reduce a likeness to its most essential lines ensured that artists and admirers continued to return to it. Today, Victorian-inspired silhouette cutting remains a compelling art form, valued for its precision, its graphic beauty, and the extraordinary sense of character that can emerge from a single, unbroken contour. .@StarbeamOne Daily Status* Current Story: v2 Documentation + Blog Announcement Notes: It's on the documentation, so you know it must be getting real. 😅 Well, really, first it's the blog announcement, which is what I worked on yesterday. I got halfway through and should get the other half completed this morning. It's somewhat nice to get back to blogging, but it's also a good reminder of why I like daily updates. Documentation is a bigger story, and I can already tell from all the little tasks popping up that it might spill into next week as I deploy v2 (still scheduled for Friday). The Preview Environment is still active, and we're getting good use out of it, no major (or really, *any*) exceptions, so that's good to wake up to. Overall, traffic/activity is a little slower (by design), so that helps with the anxiety of making a huge push (I mentioned by design right? 😅) Still feeling really good about this Friday's release. 🙏 #DailyDeveloper #Status #BuildingInPublic * The attached image was AI-generated via #Midjourney with the prompt `Mixed media , depicting An immense, geometric Dyson sphere or orbital ring surrounding a dying star, with intricate surface patterns crackling with bright, bold, beautiful contrasting glowing neon colors, created a blend of woodblock print and watercolor washes with no drips or runs, seamless transitions , extraordinary realism , exquisite detailing , layering of colors for depth and shading --ar 16:9`
.@StarbeamOne Daily Status* Current Story: v2 Preview Environment Testing Notes: After some "time off" (aka the weekend 😏) I will resume work on the finishing touches for the v2 deployment slated for this Friday, October 30th. First, I'll focus on a blog announcement. What? Yes, we still have a blog, and no, I haven't updated it in a long time. Part of the reason was a really bad OneDrive bug that started in 2024 and prevented shared folders from being available, which is where my blog scripts were located. Sure, I probably could have copied them locally and still run them there, but with the stressful v2 rewrite underway and all the (financial) stuff happening at the time, I said nope and would get to it some other time. Well, two years later and I still haven't done that. Besides, we have X/Facebook (*cough*) and other channels now where I do my daily updates. A version release, particularly one that has taken 2.5+ years for one reason or another, deserves special attention, so I will try to address it this week, starting today as I brush the dust off those scripts. Beyond that, there is still documentation, and while I will start it this week, I don't think I'll finish it; there's a lot to cover. It's not critical, though, since we're not currently promoting/onboarding. I'll still make this a priority this week and into next to get the new features and workflows in there. #DailyDeveloper #Status #BuildingInPublic * The attached image was AI-generated via #Midjourney with the prompt `An awesome epic profile background for social media, featuring a scene in space with a space station and a cool starship, based on the series Expanse, with a hint of The Fifth Element, prominently featuring bright bold contrasting glowing neon colors --ar 16:9`

.@StarbeamOne Daily Status* Current Story: v2 Preview Environment Testing Notes: It's been a long time since I was here, and I am not complaining. I actually spent the weekend ... not working like a normal person? 😅 Yeah, that was great. I caught up on personal errands that have piled up for the past month. Before that, however, I spent yesterday cleaning up some identified issues in Preview. At one point, there was concern that I missed a field altogether in the migrator when full descriptions weren't showing in products, but nope, that's how it was in v1. In v2, we copy the data wholesale, so I had to run a script to reflect that consistently. Other issues came up, all resolved without much effort. A few users are checking out the system and producing products; no errors, and everything is running as it should. I can't tell you how amazing it is to wake up to activity generated without any errors reported. This week, the plan is to take it easy and work on documentation. I also have a blog post to outline the general scope of changes for v2, which are myriad; it's 2.5 years of full-time/part-time effort. It's basically that, plus watching for any errors that come up during this time. Like I said, kind of chill and it's been a while since I have been here... ✌ #DailyDeveloper #Status #BuildingInPublic * The attached image was AI-generated via #Midjourney with the prompt `An epic feature shot deep of space, prominently featuring bold, bright, colorful, glowing, contrasting neon colors --ar 16:9`

.@StarbeamOne Daily Status* Current Story: v2 Preview Environment Testing Notes: Another positive day yesterday. This seems to be happening more often, and I hope it continues. 🙏 I was able to get a full deployment to our v2 Preview environment and fix identified issues. All scenarios passed, and I am feeling good about the quality of this release. It's been a while since I've been here, and I'm enjoying every second of it. I like to say software is 99% grief to get to that 1% bliss, and that bliss is where I am right now. Rare but gladly accepted. I sent more personal invitations yesterday afternoon, and I'll send a few more this morning. Then I'll make a general availability announcement later today. The goal is to test this next week, and then on Friday, October 30th, 2026, I'll finally flip the switch to v2. Quite the journey, and I am beyond appreciative of the opportunity. 🙏 #DailyDeveloper #Status #BuildingInPublic * The attached image was AI-generated via #Midjourney with the prompt `An external shot of a futuristic space station in another universe made of shiny bright neon glowing metal, prominently featuring bright glowing contrasting neon colors, epic lighting, there may be a Dyson sphere nearby --ar 16:9`

.@StarbeamOne Daily Status* Current Story: v2 Preview Environment Testing Notes: Yesterday was a bit of a struggle, as I tried another full deployment to the Preview environment with all the latest fixes from the past week. For one reason or another, I kept running into issues that broke the process partway through (or worse). I managed to iron those out and finally deploy, and after some testing, it looks really good. Accounting is balanced now, and we're officially making the revenue we're supposed to make when transactions occur. I am going to do another pass this morning, and if all goes well (it seems like it should, it's looking good), I'll announce general availability for the Preview environment later today. My feeling/hope is that we'll have this up to test for a week, and next Friday I'll switch over to the actual Production environment, and we'll finally, officially be on v2 of our marketplace. 🙏 #DailyDeveloper #Status #BuildingInPublic * The attached image was AI-generated via #Midjourney with the prompt `An internal shot of a futuristic space station in another universe made of shiny bright neon glowing metal, prominently featuring bright bold contrasting glowing neon colors, epic lighting, there may be a Dyson sphere nearby --ar 16:9`

Starbeamers: ⚡It's our Free the Flares Friday #artchallenge ⚡️! Based on the #theme "Halloween Storybook Art " 𝑆ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑜w👇 Turn the page, and the ordinary world slips away. The forest grows taller, the moon hangs impossibly low, and crooked little houses glow with candlelight beneath a sky crowded with stars. A small ghost wanders down a leaf-strewn lane, a black cat watches from a crooked fence, and somewhere beyond the pumpkins and tangled hedgerows, a witch is brewing something that smells suspiciously of cinnamon and trouble. Halloween storybook art captures the peculiar enchantment of the tales we loved as children—the delicious shiver of the unknown, the warmth of a lantern in the dark, and the feeling that just beyond the edge of the page, an adventure is waiting to begin. This theme invites artists to create Halloween scenes that feel plucked from the pages of a treasured old storybook. Your story might be cozy and whimsical, delightfully eerie or touched with a little gothic melancholy, but give it that unmistakable sense of a world beyond our own. The finest storybook illustrations do more than show us a scene; they make us want to turn the page, follow the characters into the darkness, and discover what happens next ~@FedwinTheWise 🪶 #StarbeamOne #Artists: Post any relevant storefronts below.
