Nearly half of younger StepChange clients surveyed weren't earning enough to cover essential costs. 44% had borrowed to pay rent or their mortgage.
Some sobering findings from new @StepChange research with @BristolUni, funded by @NatWestGroup.

ALT StepChange-branded graphic on a deep purple background featuring a quote from a client survey respondent: “I work all the hours but yet my take home just about covers the basics and my debt.” The quote appears in large white text, with the report title Starting Out, Falling Behind beneath it. The StepChange Debt Charity logo appears at the top, with the University of Bristol and NatWest Group logos along the bottom.

Fascinating day at @StepChange’s office, bringing together people across energy, regulation, financial services and the consumer sector to discuss debt and affordability.
Big takeaway: energy debt is no longer just the aftermath of a price shock. It’s becoming structural. (1/7)
Another wonderful review. 🫶

Thank you @lukejcr for being such a tireless advocate for proper bailiff regulation. We are so pleased to have your support.
🚨The government has announced that all bailiffs will have to work exclusively with firms accredited by the Enforcement Conduct Board.
StepChange has campaigned for proper bailiff regulation for more than a decade, and we welcome today’s announcement.
📣 Championing the consumer voice at the highest level.
Yesterday our CEO @VikkiBrownridge visited Number 10 Downing Street for discussions with officials about our insights as a charity.
We welcome the positive steps taken to ease cost of living pressures - like temporarily cutting VAT on energy and capping bus fares - but know that much more needs to be done for the millions struggling with their finances. This meeting was a great opportunity to talk about what we are seeing on the front line and the solutions we are advocating for.
And, of course, no visit to Number 10 would be complete without a quick hello to its most famous resident, Larry the cat! 🐈⬛
We’re proud to contribute our expertise and insights at the highest levels of government, ensuring the consumer voice remains at the centre of decision-making, and look forward to future conversations.

We’ve reached out to some of the Prime Minister’s close contacts to ask for measures that we think will make the most difference to the 4 million-plus living in problem debt The Cost of Living:

We welcome @andyburnham's announcement of new cost-of-living measures as he begins his tenure as Prime Minister. The cut to VAT on electricity bills is a positive step, and we’re pleased to see action on energy costs - something we’ve long highlighted as a key driver of the cost-of-living crisis and problem debt.
