There are members of the Jewish community who feel safer living next to Hamas and Hezbollah than in London, says @alexgeorgiou - and this is an extremely sad indictment of how far antisemitism in this country has festered.

Yesterday, @Councillorsuzie proposed a motion to condemn the Green Party's policy of "Zionism is Racism." Watch in full Susan Hall AM's opening remarks, as she expresses the fear and concern that Britain's Jewish community has to endure as a result of these nasty politics.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch praises the Royal Navy and its role in ending the slave trade. Badenoch says that while 'labour have been talking about apologising' she is 'proud of our history' and wants us 'to remember our history in a proud way. trib.al/KBuIHcu

The Conservatives have recorded their highest level of support since the general election to come within two points of Labour, YouGov polling for The Times suggests Almost one in four voters (24%) now say they would back Kemi Badenoch’s party if an election were held tomorrow — up two points in a week The figure is broadly similar to the 23.7% of voters that supported the party at the last general election, under Rishi Sunak. However, it is a marked improvement over the averages of between 17% and 19% at which the party has been polling for much of this year 67% of Conservative voters from 2024 would now choose the party again, while 13% of the Tories’ support comes from voters who backed the Liberal Democrats at the last election Significantly, the Tories also appear to be attracting younger voters, potentially drawn by the party’s pledges to cut taxes. Some 17% of voters aged between 18 and 24 now intend to back the party, a higher figure than for the Lib Dems and Reform UK combined thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

Telling the story of what happened in my last years at the BBC has meant being honest about something I have found even harder to talk about. After I raised a grievance about antisemitism, I was gradually isolated and denied more and more of the job I loved so much. The loneliness of that took a serious toll on my mental health. I became ill with anorexia, a recurrence of an illness I had when I was younger, but this time it came back with a vengeance. Each time I thought I was taking a step or two forward, something would happen at work that knocked me back. I was ashamed, and at times I am not sure I was believed. I kept trying to explain that I was struggling. More than once I was told I wasn’t the only one. I felt like colleagues thought I was making it up. Since February last year I have been admitted to hospital four times. The most recent admission, and I hope the last, was for three months over the summer. The NHS staff on that ward saved me. I’m sharing this because if I was going to tell my story honestly, I had to tell all of it. Shame keeps people silent. Anorexia is an illness, not a choice and not a weakness, and no one who is this unwell should have to prove it. Swipe for some of what I was told along the way. @HadleyFreeman has also struggled with anorexia, and in her brilliant piece in The Sunday Times she writes about our shared experience. Thank you, Hadley. Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

Brilliant to be on the long list to be the Conservative candidate for Mayor of London. I’m looking forward to the competition and can’t wait to speak to members all over our great city. Together, we will make London a city we can all be proud of again.

Huge congrats @Ameet_Jogia, you will make a fantastic MP for Hendon
Honoured to be selected again for Hendon. Last time it came down to 15 votes. This time I'll earn every one of them, fighting for the families, businesses and neighbours who make this place home. Let's make Hendon blue again @conservatives.

It is a stain on us as a society that Jewish children are frightened to go to school in Britain in 2026. I welcome Sir David Bell's review & thank those brave enough to share their experiences. Warm words will not be enough, the recommendations must be properly enforced.

Over 500 Conservative councillors have signed our open letter calling on Green councillors to stand up for British Jewish residents. The Green Party has declared “Zionism to be racism”. Zack Polanski didn’t stay to vote against it. And yesterday, he told Laura Kuenssberg he wouldn’t overturn it: “I don’t think this is actually controversial.” We’re asking Green councillors to disavow the motion, challenge antisemitism and reassure Jewish residents they’ll be represented without prejudice. Silence is a choice.

Antisemitism in schools has doubled in 3 years. Politics is seeping into the classroom, & we cannot stand by & do nothing. To those who questioned the need to tighten political impartiality laws, I say speak to the Jewish parents who are frightened to send their children to school in 2026 then tell me why these changes aren’t necessary.
