Has Witkoff or any other senior official in Trump administration examined history of US companies in Russian oil market in 2002-2008?
Breaking news: The US and Russia are discussing a potential return by American companies to the Russian oil market as part of wider talks to end Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine ft.trib.al/4gZrY6H
Exactly right. Trump administration has been showering political and other gifts on Russia for 19 months.
What do they have to show for it?
US importation of Russian oil or gas, including diesel, would appear to be illegal under the 2022 Ending Importation of Russian Oil Act.
This is a really, really bad idea.
The Trump administration has encouraged former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to run for UN Secretary-General, with Russia and China reportedly supportive of a joint candidacy.
Orbán is reportedly interested but reluctant to run without confidence of winning.
Trump and Vance are expected to support him, with a possible announcement after the U.S. midterm elections.

The Kremlin has no intention of halting the war for talks with Ukraine
Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesperson, stated that continuing trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States does not mean a pause in hostilities.
At the same time, the Kremlin spokesperson suggested that a ceasefire in the area of the occupied city of Oleshky could serve as a model for agreements along other sections of the front line.
Moscow is willing to discuss negotiations but offers no promise to suspend military operations during diplomatic talks.
Putin is apparently hoping that the negotiations will drag on, giving him more time to seize additional Ukrainian territory.

Some of these missiles come from third-country stockpiles, but Hegseth has to sign off because they are US-origin.
Hegseth's delay is inexcusable and is killing Ukrainians.
#Russia wants #NATO to return to its 1997 posture.
But Russia in 1997 was very different from today's Russia, which is an autocratic, neo-imperialist, militarist state that launched largest war Europe has seen since 1945.
🚨 Putin plans to use Ukraine peace talks to push NATO back to its 1997 military posture
According to The Telegraph, the Kremlin wants to force NATO to scale back its military presence in Europe to levels seen before Eastern European countries joined the Alliance.
This could mean demanding the withdrawal of NATO forces from Poland, the Baltic states, and Finland.
That is why Moscow is pushing for European countries to participate in negotiations over Ukraine. Diplomatic sources cited by The Telegraph say Putin wants to turn talks about ending the war into negotiations over the entire European security architecture.
The issue may also have been discussed during Putin's three-hour meeting with Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, in St. Petersburg.
However, European countries have previously rejected the Kremlin's demands to reduce NATO's military presence on its eastern flank.

What security guarantees would #Ukraine have that Putin would not use such a settlement to regenerate his military and have #Russia attack again in a few years time?
The US new peace plan to end the war in Ukraine has been revealed:
-A demilitarised zone will be created along the current frontline or when the fighting for the Donbas has concluded.
-Trilateral negotiations will start between Ukraine, Russia and the US to end the war.
-Ukraine will drop NATO bid and in return will be given investments and EU integration.
-Many sanctions will be lifted on Russia and US investment will take place, as well as the west and Europe normalising relations with Russia.
-Potential restart of Nord Steam gas pipeline into Europe supplying energy.
Russia has been trying--and failing--to take all of Donbas for more than 4 years.
That part still in Ukrainian hands is home to 200,000 people and major defensive positions that have stymied Russian military.
And Kyiv is supposed to just hand it over?
On #Russia-#Ukraine, Trump is out of sync with American people.
Trump ended US military and economic aid to Ukraine and waived sanctions on Russia.
Poll shows 59% of Americans support military and economic aid to Ukraine, and 69% support increasing sanctions on Russia.
As Russia’s war in Ukraine continues, Council polling finds the US public remains supportive of sending military and economic aid to Kyiv and in favor of boosting sanctions against Moscow.

This is what Putin does to what he thinks are his own people?
Putin claims that “recent genetic studies” show Russians and Ukrainians are “one people”.
He also said Moscow was “even now” ready to negotiate and seek a way to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. An agreement was possible, he said, but warned that if the other side chose a different path, the outcome would be different.
Putin added that Russia would pursue its stated objectives and achieve all the goals of its “special military operation” regardless.

How should people in Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania -- which were once part of Russian Empire -- feel about Putin's comment?
Putin on Ukraine:
The lands lost by Kyiv are not "their territory"; they are historically Russian lands.

Kyiv predates Moscow by centuries, and southern/eastern Ukraine was ruled by the Cossack Hetmanate and Crimean Khanate long before 18th-century Russian Imperial annexation. In 1991, every Ukrainian region voted overwhelmingly for independence, recognized by Russia 1994.

This indicates that #Ukraine's campaign to strike #Russia's oil refineries is having major impact.
Good.
NEW: Rosneft deep dive by Bloomberg News
+ Officials at Russia’s largest oil producer are concerned that even a few more months of the war with Ukraine could leave lasting damage across the business.
+ One of Rosneft’s biggest refineries, Ryazan, has been shut for more than half the time since it was first hit by Ukraine in May and has run well below full capacity when operating, according to damage assessments seen by Bloomberg.
+ Another, Syzran, has spent much of the past six months either completely shut or operating at less than a third of capacity, according to data reviewed by Bloomberg. The Tuapse refinery has been offline since April.
+ Ukraine is conducting repeat strikes on the refineries as soon as repairs are completed or nearing completion. The need to repeatedly repair damaged equipment is straining operations and causing costs to pile up to levels that Rosneft officials have privately warned cannot be sustained long-term.
+ Some plants have deliberately slowed repairs as a result, stretching work that should take days into weeks, according to people familiar with the matter.
+ Efforts to protect the facilities with shipping containers, nets and steel cables have proved ineffective against swarms of drones, company plans show.
+ The damage is particularly difficult to repair when strikes hit complex secondary units, whose parts would previously have been sourced from the West. It means relying on Russian-made copies and Chinese imports that can take months to obtain and are not always compatible with existing machinery.
+ It’s put Rosneft into financial trouble. Even before the ramping up of Ukraine’s drone campaign, the company saw a “perfect storm” for its finances. Since then, its profits are down and debt is rising despite what should have been a big windfall from the Iran war.
+ Moscow Credit Bank, which is linked to Rosneft, is showing signs of distress with $8 billion of problem loans. It highlights how both Russia’s energy and banking sectors are coming under strain at the same time, a dynamic causing concern to Russian finance officials.

If Trump believes waiving sanctions on Russia will get Putin to make concessions, he is sadly mistaken.
Putin reads this as weakness and will continue to game Trump, as he has successfully done since early 2025.
