A beautiful moment from the Hindu BusinessLine Changemakers of the year Awards ceremony in the presence of the Honourable Finance Minister of India, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman. The breeding season of our beloved Hargila birds has begun! Let us take inspiration from these wonderful birds, stay positive always, and believe in the power of coexistence.

Today I attended a book release program online held in Uganda . I was surprised to receive this email from a young 6 year old girl and I joined this program online although I was travelling. It was a book release program of Author Liya Dhara, a six year old girl and one of her book is about the Greater Adjutant, Hargila. I wanted to share with all of you with a hope that Liya will spread hope and optimism to everyone with her passion and action.

Honoured to share the conservation success story of Assam at Cornell University, USA! From engaging with 60 MBA students at Cornell’s SC Johnson College of Business to delivering a guest lecture at the College of Veterinary Medicine to 100 students and faculties, scientists, as part of the Cornell K. Lisa Yang Center for Wildlife Health’s Distinguished Speaker Series, Meeting a group of post doctoral fellows and understanding their research , knowledge sharing was also an eye opener for me. Had an opportunity to meet a few full bright scholars too and share our journey. it has been an enriching experience of learning, sharing and building connections at the Cornell Ashley school of Global development. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to bring the story of Assam’s women-led conservation movement , success story of biodiversity conservation to a global academic platform and to strengthen scientific collaboration for the future of Hargila and other bird conservation. I am so glad that after hearing our story so many people from here wants to visit Assam and experience our journey and culture. I am renewed with enough hope and optimism.

I am deeply honoured to be invited by Cornell University to conduct a series of sessions, lectures and interactions across different departments. Had a session with around 60 MBA students and share the story of the Hargila, community-led conservation, women’s leadership and the lessons we have learned from Assam. I have also had enriching interactions with students, faculty members and research scholars from different departments, including the Cornell Lab of Ornithology , particularly special experience given our lifelong lessons with the Greater Adjutant Stork, the Hargila and the Hargila army. So happy to see our Hargila birds videos, pictures being displayed continuously at the cornel lab of ornithology museum where visitors can come and see. It was great to deliver a lecture at Cornell Atkinson center of sustainability . Everyone was interested to learn the lessons from our Hargila army and I feel really blessed. Today, I am honoured to deliver a guest lecture at the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine and looking forward to meet faculties, research scholars there. I am grateful to Cornell University for this warm welcome and hospitality. Many thanks to Veterinary College of Cornell University for all your support and hospitality.

It was a deeply emotional and unforgettable moment for me. As I stood there receiving the Hindu BusinessLine Changemaker of the Year Award 2026, conferred by the Hon’ble Finance Minister of India, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman Ji , what moved me most was seeing everyone celebrate the Hargila birds, the Hargila Army, and the journey of our communities. This honour belongs to all the community members, to all the incredible women of the Hargila Army who have converted themselves from home makers to be conservationists and to the people of Assam whose constant love, support and belief have carried this journey forward. For me, the greatest reward has always been seeing a bird once misunderstood and feared being celebrated with pride and affection. My deepest gratitude to Hindu BusinessLine for recognising this journey and for all support.

“When women rise, magic happens, and the Hargila takes flight,” said Purnima Devi Barman, the businessline Changemaker of 2026 as she accepted the award to thunderous applause. In a heartwarming moment, the conservationist from Assam who has saved the endangered greater adjutant stork (Hargila), asked the audience to move their hands in an action reminiscent of a bird flapping its wings — a spontaneous call that touched and stirred the audience. Sharing my time here at our Raimona National Park. I was truly mesmerised by the diversity of butterflies, birds, trees, and other animals. Along with them, the untold stories of Raimona’s history has truly inspired me. I urge everyone to explore the rich heritage, biodiversity and culture of Assam.

Deeply grateful to Samagra Shiksha Assam and everyone who made this World Environment Day initiative possible. It is truly humbling that our conversation and our voice could reach out to over 2 million students and as per the record 39,166 schools, 2,045,835 students, 120,499 parents, and 128,236 teachers across Assam. On this World Environment Day, while this program was unfolding across the state, I lost my beloved father. He always encouraged me to inspire new generations. Sharing this message with millions of students is my tribute to my beloved soldier father, a patriot who served in the Indian Army. My heartfelt gratitude to every student, teacher, parent, and organizer who made this possible. Together, let us continue turning awareness into action for a greener future. Once again , countless thanks to Samagra Siksha Assam. @mygovassam @CMOfficeAssam @ranojpeguassam @jayanta_malla #Hargila #WorldEnvironmentDay #SamagraShikshaAssam
