Last July, the LA City Council banned the words "nigger" and "cunt" from their public comment period.
And while you may hate those epithets, it's a dangerous power to grant—one the council president is admittedly keen to abuse.
My first for the @latimes:

A movement against injustice, driven by the language of DEI, transformed colleges and universities from protectors of free thoughts into moral police of ideologies.
𝙎𝙥𝙚𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 takes a deep dive into the erosion of free speech at colleges & universities from campus protests to government demands by asking questions mainstream media does not want to discuss.

“Indulging the cognitive biases that make reasonable and ethical people disappear also helps create cultural conditions in which unreasonable and unethical people can take power. We can all play a part in interrupting that process.”

One professor punished for speech? An anecdote. A hundred? Cherry-picked. A thousand? Selection bias. Surveys? Bad questions. Better surveys? Methodological concerns!
I've spent 25 years watching defenders of the higher ed status quo turn every new piece of evidence into yet another demand for proof, creating a never-ending cycle of increasingly impossible standards for demonstrating problems that were already obvious 50 years ago!
Seriously, this is infuriating. I don’t know ANYBODY who talks like that—especially not to non-Spanish speakers.

Useful but unsurprising finding! Whatever your political tribe is worried about you will overestimate. Conservatives on immigration and trans women in sports, liberals on police shootings, racism (by certain measures), etc. Pollsters should ask in both 'directions.'
In a new poll, 15% of Americans said they believe between 1 and 5% of NCAA athletes are transgender.
14% think between it's between 6 and 25%.
Meanwhile, an NCAA spokesperson confirmed that the current number is "effectively" zero

Smug fatalism is the one position I can’t stand. When I was a kid, Spain, Portugal, and Greece were ruled by military dictators. Walls with barbed wire cut Berlin and Jerusalem in half. Being gay was illegal in Spain, and interracial marriage was forbidden in Virginia. You can make your own list of the changes you've seen, but the point is that humans have agency, nothing is static, and hope never dies. Onward!

This guy is a devout Christian who was granted protection from his home country because Islamist terrorists are trying to institute sharia law. He's lived here half his life. He's married to an American & has American kids. This is not who the government should be targeting.
A Texas father who had lived in the U.S. for 25 years with no criminal record was finishing his night shift as an Uber driver when immigration agents detained him.
Without being able to speak to his lawyer or a judge, he was put on a plane and sent first to Ghana, a country where he had no ties. He was then sent to his home country, despite a determination by a U.S. immigration court judge that he could not be deported there due to likely persecution. cbsn.ws/3Ude66r

I’m tired of hearing “the Constitution is not a suicide pact” whenever someone wants to limit our rights.
The warning came from a 1949 Supreme Court dissent opposing a decision to overturn a conviction for inflammatory speech.
The majority ruled otherwise. America survived.

The @UofMaryland Athletics Department has agreed to First Amendment training with FIRE after two student journalists were reported to campus police for “suspicious activity” while trying to interview @umterps football players.
Student reporters should be able to do their jobs in public spaces without fear of unnecessary police encounters.
We appreciate Maryland Athletics’ willingness to address these concerns. Public universities — including their athletic departments — have a duty to protect press freedom, not intimidate those exercising it.
For @testudotimes, @JudeWilkenfeld and I were outside Jones-Hill House trying to get players to comment. An athletics staffer took pictures of us, and a police dispatch was called for suspicious activity; a cop and 2 cop cars pulled up, and officers ID’d us and asked us to leave.
