Justice is supposed to be blind. But should it also be blind to the identity of the judge? My latest essay explores why that question may be the most important constitutional debate in America today. ⬇️ open.substack.com/pub/stuart…

The Defence Secretary, who has never served, says he doesn’t care what the Defence Select Committee thinks about defence spending. Its members have at least 42 years’ Armed Forces service between them. Dismissing that experience is not strength. It is a failure of leadership.

I would sooner give a fair hearing to the UK becoming the 51st State of the USA than rejoining the European Union.

“We are gay men and we consider this legislation to be anti-gay. It is transing the gay away.” Jeff Dudgeon played a vital role in the campaign to decriminalise homosexuality in Northern Ireland. He now opposes the Conversion Practices (Criminalisation) Bill, which is before the Northern Ireland Assembly. A founding member of the Northern Ireland Gay Rights Association, Jeff brought the first successful challenge to the criminalisation of homosexuality at the European Court of Human Rights. On 22 October 1981, the Court ruled that Northern Ireland’s law violated his right to respect for private life. The Homosexual Offences (Northern Ireland) Order 1982 followed, bringing the law in line with the rest of the UK. Forty-five years later, he is campaigning against a Bill presented as necessary to protect LGBT people. As he points out, those who oppose it are routinely smeared as homophobes. “Conversion practices” conjures up electric shock treatment and corrective rape — horrific practices that are already illegal. So what would this Bill criminalise? It would expose parents to prosecution, and up to two years in prison, for having honest conversations with children who are confused about their gender identity. Gender identity issues can cause great turmoil within families. Many parents already feel pressured to affirm their child’s belief that they were born in the wrong body, for fear of damaging their relationship. The Bill would add the threat of prosecution for parents who wish to guide their child away from life-changing, irreversible medicalisation. It would rip families apart. This is of particular concern to gay rights campaigners such as Jeff, because the vast majority of gender-confused children are same-sex attracted, and same-sex attraction often goes hand in hand with gender non-conformity in childhood. Nadine’s ongoing battle for relevance continues…
It’s deliberate. She’s appealing to Labour in a ‘gender neutral’ way and is seriously after the Speakers job. I believe she is allegedly is the person who leaks stories to the media regarding the Speakers travel arrangements etc which results in negative media interest despite the fact that her own travel log and expenses make interesting reading. The Westminster journalist who told me this was fairly unambiguous in his assertion. Her actual performance in the debate was dreadful. Constant ‘look at me’ preening for the camera and interruptions. The Commons is a sad place these days.

What makes this even more flabbergasting is that the last Tory government contended with an unexpected global pandemic where they made the decision to pay most of the country to sit at home for months on end AND had to manage to fallout of the Russian war on Ukraine (including subsidising the energy bills of the nation); and Labour has STILL managed to do worse than they did (and in less time).
The last Tory parliament was the worst on record for stagnant living standards. Hold my beer, says this Labour Parliament. We’re on track to be even worse. Source: OBR

It is, in the words of Nigel’s hero “fake news” Your prayer card is there to guarantee you a place at prayers, if you turn up - or are on a parliamentary committee so have an official reason to be elsewhere - you’ve got a seat for the day If you don’t turn up, it’s removed. Been the case for over a century I believe. MPs who aren’t religious or of other faiths just turn up and just sit silently for the couple of minutes prayers Farage, as ever, thinks he should have special rules for him. He doesn’t get special rules and he shouldn’t get special rules. With @Nigel_Farage there’s always someone else to blame. But it’s always him.
Nigel Farage was unable to attend the Budget in the Commons because his seat reservation was removed, The Telegraph understands. The Reform UK leader’s prayer card — a green slip of paper that backbench MPs put on a spot on the green benches to reserve their seat — was moved after it was placed this morning. 🔗 telegraph.co.uk/business/202…

Farage's prayer card lacked a valid date stamp and was removed per House of Commons protocol. MPs confirm seats were available unreserved and he did not attend prayers to secure one. mirror.co.uk/news/politics/… x.com/hope_sapphire/…

Just watched Kemi’s reply to the budget. The faces on the Labour front benches were a picture. They’re all thick. It’s not just a different ideology, they’re genuinely dense.

It’s clear to anyone with eyes, ears and a brain that Kemi Badenoch is a force of nature. She’s out there holding Labour to account at every opportunity, whilst Reform’s rather illustrious leader couldn’t even be bothered to turn up for PMQs or the Budget.

Is that it? John Healey had a big job to do cleaning up Labour’s mess. This Budget fails to do it. Britain is overspent, overborrowed and overtaxed. This Budget does not come close to meeting the moment. My full response👇

And THIS, my friends, is the REAL reason @bioware was cancelled. For standing up for inclusivity. They want to silence those who stand with the LBGTQ+ community. Remember: when your voice counts the most, the harder they will try to silence you.

Staggering that the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee is THIS uninformed.
Israeli Exit Polls show Netanyahu's been defeated. Israel has rejected his dark vision, forever war & cruel, dystopic, authoritarian policies. But to succeed, the anti Netanyahu block needs to work with the Israeli Arab parties. I dearly hope this great chance isn't wasted

Exit polls did not show Netanyahu has been defeated. Major Israeli television networks projected a deadlock, with neither Netanyahu's bloc nor the opposition securing the 61 seats needed for a majority. asia.nikkei.com/politics/israe… reuters.com/world/middle-e…

This was a legitimate military operation in which terrorists were killed by lawful force.
A former soldier who planned an SAS ambush that claimed the lives of three IRA men 35 years ago has said the ‘chain of command’ in similar operations included British Prime Ministers. Three IRA members, Pete Ryan, Lawrence McNally and Tony Doris, were shot dead in Coagh, Co Tyrone, in June 1991, in what some believe to be a shoot-to-kill operation. Read more: tinyurl.com/53rre6bh

“Trump saved the Republican Party” is going to look silly in a fortnights time when the Dems have flipped one or both of the Senate and the House. And that’s not even beginning to consider the damage that’ll be done down the ballot. This is such a selective interpretation of the facts - and that’s before I even begin to mention that MAGA obsessives are now claiming that the Supreme Court has 6 conservative Justices when they’ve spent years berating ACB and others for not voting the way they wanted every single time.
Before Big Orange came on the scene: 1) John McCain - 176 electoral votes 2) Mitt Romney - 206 electoral votes 3) Ohio, Florida and Iowa were swing States 4) Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania were safely considered “The Blue Wall” Since Trump: 1) THREE consecutive election victories(one obviously stolen) 2) Ohio, Florida and Iowa have been taken off the board 3) Democrats now have to wage war to win Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania 4) Sent into Retirement: a) Jeb Bush b) John Kasich c) Chris Christie d) Jeff Flake e) Bob Corker f) Pat Toomey(voted to impeach) g) Ben Sasse(voted to impeach) h) Rob Portman i) Lamar Alexander j) Roy Blunt k) Richard Burr(voted to impeach) l) Paul Ryan m) Brad Raffensperger n) John Cornyn o) Bill Cassidy(voted to impeach) p) 9 of the 10 GOP representatives who voted to impeach Trump are gone 5)) 12 states(of 31 that register by party) had more Republicans registered than Democrats. Today that number is 15. 6) 2016 - Pennsylvania had 1 million more Democrat active voters. Today it is 25,811. 7) USAID stripped out and mass fraud uncovered in blue state. 2016 Democrats had a $40 million cash advantage. Today Republicans have a $165 million advantage. 8) SCOTUS: from Five conservatives to Six Donald Trump didn't ruin the Republican Party…he saved it!

People judged a threat to our national security can still use human rights laws to block their removal. How is that acceptable? I challenged ministers in Parliament to remove those legal barriers so dangerous individuals can be deported. Public safety must come first.👇
