At the Microsoft South Africa town hall I bumped into former SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter. He is one of those great South Africans I truly admire. The work he and his team did turning SARS around has been phenomenal. He told me his first leadership job was at Eskom. They bet on a young man with enormous potential. In the early 1990s it was uncommon for a coloured person to run a power station and manage largely white teams. He won people over one by one - through focused actions that showed he saw them as individuals and that he cared. He went on to become, by his own account, one of the first people of colour in South Africa to run a power station. He also shared how they introduced local methods of maintaining turbines and rotors instead of shipping them to original equipment manufacturers, cutting both cost and time. He has a nose for improving productivity while motivating people. What I appreciated most was his focus on discipline. He spoke about how work from home has damaged culture and how disengaged some employees become when they join meetings only via Teams. At SARS he insisted that those based in Gauteng attend his management meetings in person - including union shop stewards, who in many organisations are treated as untouchable. In my observation, the decline in performance across both private and public sectors is linked to this issue of discipline. Too many leaders and managers are uncomfortable leading and managing. Difficult conversations are not their cup of tea. Standards slip. Even high performers start asking why they should go the extra mile when there are no consequences for those who simply do not show up. I call it tough love - the leadership style that combines a big heart with discipline and the willingness to have difficult conversations. That is the standard we need if we are serious about building a country that works. #LeadershipMatters #ProudlySA

AEMO has just blown out the cost of Australia's Net Zero grid to $128 billion and now says coal must run until 2049 to keep the lights on. Wind forecasts for 2030 have been slashed from 42.6 GW to 26 GW, with offshore wind now admitted to cost 40% more and deliver far less power. Transmission--the backbone of Net Zero--has been slashed from 10,000 km to 6,000 km after cancellations and cost blowouts of up to 100%. Coal remains indispensable, says AEMO, and the country's fleet must run 11 years longer than previously promised to stop blackouts and cover stalled renewable build-out. Reliability risks are also rising. Aging coal is being driven past design limits and a failure at any major plant could destabilize the grid. Gas becomes the strategic backup when solar collapses at dusk and during multi-day wind lulls -- the exact conditions that already triggered emergency warnings this year. Every pillar of the plan--wind, transmission, timelines, costs--has been revised, delayed or downsized. Net Zero didn't replace coal, it extended it to 2049.

WATCH 🎥 | The Minister of Electricity & Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa delivered a keynote address at the Women in Leadership Summit, ULP highlighting the historic transformation underway in the energy sector and its potential to serve as a powerful catalyst for industrialisation, economic empowerment and the meaningful inclusion of women and youth. The Minister outlined key developments and emerging opportunities across the energy sector and called on women to participate meaningfully across the entire value chain—not only as leaders and investors, but, more importantly, as owners and entrepreneurs. He acknowledged the significant barriers that continue to limit women’s participation, including limited access to capital, opportunities, markets and information. In response to these challenges, the Minister highlighted the establishment of energy parks as an important intervention to de-risk projects, create an enabling environment for investment and facilitate greater participation by women, youth and Black South Africans in the energy value chain. The Minister further challenged women to clearly articulate the support and interventions they require from government to enable effective participation and ensure that they are well positioned to take advantage of the emerging opportunities presented by the transformation of the energy sector.

From load-shedding to surplus power — and now engaging Amazon, Microsoft and Google on data centre demand. South Africa’s AI and data centre opportunity is real. We have the power. The question is whether we turn surplus into sustainable growth. Proud of the Eskom teams who made this possible. ft.com/content/107b354b-ba03…
