The West humiliated Russia in the 1990s. This war is the consequence.’ I’ve heard this in every language, from every podium. It is history rewritten backwards. Recall what actually happened to defeated Russia: no occupation. No reparations. No tribunal. It kept its nuclear arsenal and its UN veto. Its debts were forgiven and refinanced. It was handed IMF billions and a seat at the G8 — a club of democracies admitting a wounded autocracy out of hope. Now recall an actually humiliated nation: Germany, 1945. Occupied. Partitioned. Cities in ash, leaders hanged, guilt taught to its children by law. Germany became the most peaceful democracy in Europe. Russia became this. So spare me the humiliation theory. Russia was not humiliated after the Cold War. It was indulged — and it read every kindness as weakness, every gift as tribute. The grievance was never mistreatment. The grievance was lost dominion. Empires do not mourn their wounds. They mourn their slaves.

"Russian world." Moscow's name for the people it claims to protect. Mariupol: largely Russian-speaking. Destroyed. Kharkiv: largely Russian-speaking. Shelled for four years. In Kremlin language, protecting Russian speakers means bombing them.

2015: Merkel and Hollande broker Minsk II with Putin. 2022: Putin tears it up and invades. Every deal Europe brokered with Moscow became a pause before the next attack.

To everyone who says Ukraine is losing: ISW this week: Ukrainian forces are making "slow but tactically significant gains" near Oleksandrivka. The army Moscow planned to win with in days is in year five of the war. Losing looks different.

Russia's neighbours, a ledger: Moldova, 1992: Russian troops in Transnistria. Still there. Georgia, 2008: about 20% occupied. Still occupied. Ukraine, 2014: Crimea. Ukraine, 2022: full invasion. The pattern isn't NATO. It's Moscow.

Prediction: the Oleshky ceasefire holds, because it costs Moscow nothing. The ceasefire that would cost it something, a full one, it keeps refusing. Screenshot this.

Ukrainian drones now hit industrial sites as far as Perm, in the Urals (Perm governor; ISW: a series of deep strikes on Russian industry). Who pays: Russia's war economy, one plant at a time. Who profits: whoever builds Europe's long-range drones. Verdict: bearish on Russian industrial output into 2027. Medium conviction.

The Kremlin says peace talks will take a long time. Its missiles never do. That's the whole Russian strategy: slow talks, fast strikes.

27 October 1962: a Soviet submarine under attack near Cuba prepares a nuclear torpedo. One officer, Vasili Arkhipov, refuses to approve the launch. The world was saved by a Russian who said no to Moscow's logic. Today's Kremlin jails Russians who say no.

"Denazification." One of Putin's stated aims in February 2022. Ukraine's president is Jewish. March 2022: a Russian strike hits Kyiv's TV tower beside the Babyn Yar memorial. In Kremlin language, a Nazi is anyone who says no to Moscow.

To everyone who calls arming Ukraine a "provocation": 2008: Russia invaded Georgia, a small country with no NATO protection. 2014: Russia took Crimea from a barely armed Ukraine. Weakness is the provocation. It always was.

One weekend, 24–25 October: Russia → Ukraine: 153 drones, cruise missiles, nine regions, power plants, a hypermarket, grain storage. Ukraine → Russia: 532 drones, by Moscow's own count, over 22 regions. Only one of these countries is fighting on its own land.

Russia hit Ukrainian grain storage this weekend (Zelensky). Ukraine is one of the world's biggest grain exporters. Who pays: bread buyers from Cairo to Jakarta. Who profits: Russia, the other big Black Sea wheat seller. Verdict: bullish on the Black Sea wheat risk premium into winter. Medium conviction.
