A press conference is also reportedly planned in the near future. Enho released the following statement: "Thank you very much, as always, for your warm support. Although this is a personal matter, I would like to announce that I have recently gotten married. Without ever forgetting my gratitude to everyone who supports me on a daily basis, I will now bear the responsibility of being the head of a household in my heart, and I will devote myself even further to the path of sumo. We kindly ask for your continued guidance, encouragement, and warm support." Enho suffered a severe spinal cord injury that forced him to sit out seven consecutive tournaments starting from the 2023 Summer Basho. Although he was temporarily bedridden, he made a comeback starting from the 2024 Nagoya Basho after his rank had dropped all the way down to Jonokuchi. He secured his return to the Juryo division at this year's Summer Basho. Using his marriage as a source of strength, he now aims to make his return to the Makuuchi top division for the first time since the 2020 Kyushu Basho. #italianozeki #大相撲 #sumo #相撲 #力士 #お相撲さん #grandsumo #sumoday #sumowrestling

Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, had served as president since September of last year. Hakuho retired from the Japan Sumo Association in June of last year, continued his activities aiming to have sumo recognized as an Olympic sport, and also served as an advisor to the federation. In a statement released on the federation's official website, Hakuho commented, "I have been entrusted with this important baton by former President Akio Toyoda and have now taken on the monumental role of President of the International Sumo Federation." He further shared his feelings upon taking office, stating, "To me, sumo is life itself. Through sumo, I have learned the importance of hard work, respecting others, gratitude, and confronting adversity. I believe it is now my turn to give back to sumo." Additionally, sharing his aspirations as the new chairman, he stated, "While cherishing the traditions, spirit, and values of sumo, I want to convey the appeal of sumo to even more countries and regions around the world, passing it on to children and the younger generation. Furthermore, working together with everyone involved in sumo around the globe, transcending differences in country, culture, and language, I believe my mission is to 'unite the world through sumo.'" #italianozeki #大相撲 #sumo #相撲 #力士 #お相撲さん #grandsumo #sumoday #sumowrestling

Makuuchi wrestler Abi began reminiscing in the dressing room on the fourth day of the Aki Basho. Having just secured his second win by tsukidashi against Tokihayate, he watched a replay of his close friend Wakamotoharu winning through belt-grappling sumo. "Because my mentor found my thrusting-and-pushing style back then, I am where I am today." Since childhood, Abi was naturally versatile, capable of wrestling in almost any style for better or worse. During a joint summer training session for local junior high school students in Saitama Prefecture, Masao Nishizawa—head coach of the Iruma Boys Sumo Club, who also coached former Komusubi Hokutofuji—called out to him: "If you grapple on the belt, you're third-rate. But if you thrust and push, you're first-rate." Abi recalled with a wry smile: "Back then, if I ended up grappling on the belt, a brutal butsukari was waiting for me as punishment." Later, Abi joined the stable of the late former Shikoroyama-oyakata (former Sekiwake Terao), who had also climbed the ranks through thrust-and-push sumo during his active days. Abi’s connection with Coach Nishizawa, who gave him that foundational piece of advice, continues to this day—they still share meals, and Abi sends donations when tournaments take place. To explore his own potential, Abi has also been eyeing belt-grappling sumo. Emulating his late mentor's technique of getting an underhook with his right arm, he has felt a certain level of response. However, grabbing the mawashi is a completely different ballgame. He even asked Wakamotoharu about it: "He told me, 'Grappling on the belt doesn't tire you out,' but for me, it’s not like that at all. The way we use our bodies must be completely different." On Day 8, when the two faced each other directly, Abi secured a decisive win by pushing him out. Abi was in high spirits afterward, quipping, "I'll be asking for another lesson next time, senior brother!" as a playful message to Wakamotoharu. Abi secured his winning record on the final day, with 5 of his 8 wins coming by way of oshidashi. Now in good spirits, Abi heads toward the Kyushu Tournament—where he claimed his first championship victory back in 2022. When asked about his progress with belt sumo, his simple response—"Still a long way to go"—was packed with his deep-rooted commitment to his true identity: thrust-and-push sumo. Among the attendees was 17-year-old Jonokuchi wrestler Eisei (real name Nicholas Tarasenko, Minato stable), who made his professional debut at the July Nagoya Tournament to become the second sumo wrestler hailing from England. Reflecting on his ambitions as he embarks on his six-month training curriculum—which covers practical techniques as well as sumo history—Eisei expressed his desire to level up: "By the time I graduate, I want to be able to win against wrestlers who have prior amateur sumo experience." Although Eisei admits that the coursework presents a bit of a challenge because he is currently learning Japanese, he noted that the school is already helping him progress. Having finished the September Autumn Tournament with a 4–3 record he is looking forward to honing his skills further alongside his classmates. With a promotion to the Jonidan division expected for the upcoming November Kyushu Tournament, Eisei remains eager to face a wider variety of opponents in the ring. #italianozeki #大相撲 #sumo #相撲 #力士 #お相撲さん #grandsumo #sumoday #sumowrestling
