In September 2004, after nearly six years, Mt. Olive relented and signed the contract, the largest collective bargaining agreement in NC history! It provided a grievance procedure, better pay, and allowed 8,000 H-2A workers to unionize.

In 1999, FLOC called a boycott of all Mt. Olive products to pressure the company and garnered significant public attention, esp. from religious groups like National Council of Churches. Many grocery stores abided by the boycott and refrained from offering Mt. Olive products.

In 1997, FLOC proposed a 3-way contract w/Mt. Olive Pickle Company, NC Growers Association, and the union, but the company refused, saying they didn't directly employ farm workers. Just who in the supply chain was responsible for working conditions dominated public discussion.

.@SupportFLOC began investigating the working conditions in the NC cucumber industry in the mid-1990s. Exempted from the minimum and overtime wages laws, many workers were paid with a piecemeal rate, often a fixed amount for each bucket of crop harvested.
