How much of a speeding problem do you think there is in the UK?
Consider this:
Sway is a small New Forest village with a couple of minor roads passing through and yet TWO MILLION speed through here each year!

Setting sensible speed limits and ensuring that people adhere to them would be a good start. #speedwatch helps.
Road collisions cost the UK economy around Β£36 billion every year. With the economy already struggling anything we can do to reduce collisions can only be a good thing. #RoadSafetyWeek

Seven things you may not know about Walesβs new 20mph default speedΒ limit westwaleschronicle.co.uk/bloβ¦
Interesting article. The main messages must be that at 20 mph a pedestrian is 5 times more likely to survive any collision than at 30 mph, and that most people who die in road accidents do so in 30 mph speed limit areas.
Good to see @NicholasHellen calling out inconsistency across UK on enforcing the limit set to protect society's most vulnerable road users - 20mph. Notes whinging from motorists who defy the law. How about we require any speed limit to have a 2ft dia sign on entering.
So far this year, Sway Community SpeedWatch have reported 633 speeding drivers and our presence has encouraged a further 2,000 not to speed. This was all done by 9 unpaid volunteers donating 190 hours of their time.
Total cost to the taxpayer = Β£0.
#speedwatch delivers!
Iβve spent over Β£750k in the last yr making Hants roads safer investing in vehicles for @HantsPolRoads & cameras on some of Hants worst roads.
For the IOW I have brought back the βdedicated roads policing unitβ, which was cut over the last 5 years. Listening-Acting-Delivering
Our stats certainly show this

A driver has been caught today by #SRU travelling at a speed of 93mph. π¨ This was in the New Forest on a 40mph road!! They will be hearing from us. Hitting an animal, cyclist or person at that speed would almost certainly kill them. #ItsNotWorthTheRisk
These figures agree with our observations from 8 years ago. Since then our stats show that Community SpeedWatch has improved things considerably, increasing compliancy to 66% last year and up to 70% so far this year.

One of many excellent reasons for adopting this platform. We should never have to suffer abuse with zero consequences. We were part of a @CommunitySpeedw pilot not long ago which was never completed. Why? @HantsPCC @HantsPolice

Always pass wide and slow. #add3minutes
Though rare, sadly this sort of behaviour is not unique. In the past, Sway has recorded speeds of up to 68 mph in our 30 mph area.
Speed check continues on the A259 Sutton Rd in seaford top speed recorded now is 71mph in a 30mph residential area @CSWSussex @Lewes_Police @sussex_police @SussexRoadsPol
Disappointing 1 hour #Speedwatch session along Pitmore Lane 30mph limit. Out of 120 vehicles passing, 37 reported for speeding, 1 at 50mph. Two school minibuses reported. #SlowDown #add3minutes #drivetoarrive
This is a really welcome piece of legislation. Far better than speed cameras or even Speedwatch. 90% of those who speed do so unintentionally. We can then concentrate on the residual 10% who are habitual and often excessive speeders.

Accidental speeding is a thing of the past. Under recently released requirements, new vehicles must feature ISA tech. Read all about it here.

This confirms what we have been saying for years. Speed is the underlying reason why those involved in crashes did not have sufficient time or space to take avoiding action to prevent an incident becoming a fatal crash.
Its time to end the scandal of complacency!!

It's a rather sobering thought that in our small parish of Sway we regularly record twice this number speeding each month.

Our driving attitude and behaviour has to change to prevent many more unnecessary deaths and suffering.

Speed limits are a maximum not a target - often it is more appropriate to drive below this speed

Many drivers treat speed limits as minimums, failing to realise the risks they pose to themselves, their passengers and other road users.
