Congratulations to the Student List on its decisive victory and to the people of Serbia that turned out in record numbers to choose their future. This is an opportunity to strengthen democracy, the rule of law, and the fight against corruption. Sweden continues to support reforms that underpin Serbia’s EU accession.

Today, the people of Serbia turned out in record numbers to shape their country’s future.
Congratulations to the Student List on its victory in the parliamentary elections.
We stand ready to support reforms on the rule of law, media freedom, the fight against corruption and strong democratic institutions, and to work together to advance Serbia’s future in the European Union.

The EU has presented its new Arctic Strategy.
As one of the Union’s three Arctic Member States, Sweden welcomes that the EU strengthens its role in the region and puts security at the forefront.
It is important that we pay more attention to the Arctic region’s increasing geopolitical weight, protection of critical infrastructure, and deepened cooperation with like-minded partners – in addition to issues such as climate, environment, and research. We also welcome that the strategy gives priority to matters regarding space policy, which is becoming essential to the EU’s security and autonomy.
The Arctic is our part of Europe. It is both a domestic and a foreign policy matter. We look forward to continuing the work with the Arctic Strategy both within the EU and with international partners.

I appreciate the position of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson @SwedishPM: it is important to increase pressure on Russia and step up support for Ukraine, not the other way around. This is exactly what Europe’s collective response to Russia’s escalation should be.
We discussed in detail what we need to defend ourselves against constant attacks, first and foremost, stronger air defenses. I thank Sweden for our agreements on Gripen fighter jets. We expect deliveries soon. They will complement our F-16s, particularly in shooting down jet-powered “shaheds.” We also focused on our path to EU membership and support for our energy sector as we prepare for winter.
I am grateful to the people of Sweden, the government, and Ulf personally for their support for Ukraine and our joint efforts to ensure Europe’s security.

Trump 🇺🇸 is obviously desperate about high diesel prices coming out of his 🇮🇷 war influencing the midterm election. His deal with Putin 🇷🇺 is deplorable, but is highly unlikely to have any effect on prices, the volume reflecting 0.03% of global consumption.

Sweden's position is the same as it has been since February 24 2022: we will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes. Now more pressure needs to be put on Russia and more support needs to be provided for Ukraine.
We regret the US agreement with Russia to supply diesel, as energy revenues are a vital source of funding Russia’s war of aggression.
On Monday, the EU will adopt the largest sanctions package to date, listing 1,600 entities in the Russian military industrial complex. This is - in contrast - a welcome step.
More countries also need to do more against the shadow fleet and eventually make use of the frozen Russian assets to the benefit of Ukraine. In all of this, we need to stay closely coordinated in the EU and with the US, UK and other international partners.
The broad political and popular support in Sweden for Ukraine is a strength and an asset in these turbulent times. Sweden stands with Ukraine, and Ukraine’s freedom and sovereignty remains our foremost foreign policy priority.

Estonia’s attribution of an arson attack orchestrated by Russia against a defence company is extremely serious. Sweden stands fully behind Estonia and I am in close touch with PM Kristen Michal.
This pattern of attacks is directed against Europe as a whole. The aim is to weaken our support for Ukraine and to intimidate us. It will not work.
Together, we will increase support for Ukraine and take further measures against Russia, while continuing to strengthen our preparedness and resilience.

I am in close contact with Chancellor Friedrich Merz. I have assured him that Sweden stands in full solidarity with Germany after the Russian hybrid attack in Leipzig.
Sweden fully supports the strong measures taken by the German government. We are united, and we will continue to stand up for our ally and neighbour.
Russia wants to intimidate us, to undermine our united deterrence and scare us into backing down from our support to Ukraine. This will fail.
Together with our allies, we are determined to increase our collective defence efforts and strengthen our deterrence.
In light of the developments, I will chair a meeting of the National Security Council tomorrow morning.

After tough negotiations, the EU has agreed on a 21st sanctions package against Russia. Freezing the EU’s oil price cap at its current low level, listing shadow fleet vessels and Russian banks, and a range of other measures – these are all steps Sweden has pushed to maintain pressure on the Russian economy. At the same time, Sweden would have liked to see an even tougher package. Energy revenues are the main source of funding for Russia’s war, and the costs for Europe pale in comparison to the price that the Ukrainian people pay on a daily basis.

I am grateful to the European Union and to every European leader for adopting the 21st sanctions package against Russia. It is very important that pressure on Russia over the war it started – and refuses to end – continues. This package includes strong measures to curb Russia's revenues, including Ukrainian proposals that have been taken into account. It is crucial to preserve our unity and keep up this pressure. We expect work on the 22nd sanctions package to move forward actively and hope it will deliver additional restrictions that will advance peace and further limit Russia's ability to sustain its war. Thank you, European Union!

I welcome the agreement on the 21st sanctions package against Russia.
At a time when Ukraine has built military momentum, our sanctions continue to weaken the economic foundations of Russia’s war effort.
We’re adding 32 more Russian banks to our transaction ban list.
As well as crypto firms and oil trading platforms.
Freezing the oil price cap adjustment for a year, so that the Russian war machine does not benefit from market shocks.
For the first time, we’re targeting vessels assisting Russia’s shadow fleet.
And we took an important step towards formally banning Russian combatants from entering the EU.
Many thanks to @Ireland2026eu for facilitating this agreement.

On Monday, the EU can finally open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova.
Sweden will continue to work for the opening of all negotiations clusters for both Ukraine and Moldova without delay, in line with the Commission’s assessment.
Many countries are now knocking on the EU’s door. They want to be part of a free Europe and the world’s largest single market. It is in our interest to help the candidate countries make progress towards joining the Union.
Today, the European Union took a major step forward.
All Member States agreed to open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova.
At the first Intergovernmental Conference on Monday, we will open the cluster on fundamentals; the backbone of the accession process.
It covers the core values and principles on which the EU is built, from the rule of law to strong democratic institutions.
This is a recognition of the determination, courage and hard work shown by both countries in advancing reforms, even in the face of immense challenges.
And a signal that the EU’s offer of peace, stability and opportunity is unmatchable.
Enlargement is a strategic choice.
By bringing our nations closer together, we strengthen peace, security and prosperity across our continent.
In a world marked by growing uncertainty, a larger European Union is in our common interest.
Enlargement remains one of the EU’s greatest success stories and our best investment in our shared future.

Sweden’ s new Arctic Strategy
Today, Minister for Foreign Affairs @MariaStenergard presented Sweden’s new Arctic Strategy.
The Strategy reflects a new security situation – the most serious for Sweden since the Second World War. The Strategy reinforces Swedish Arctic policy by defining the links between security policy, resilient communities, the economy, and the environment and climate. The aim of Sweden’s Arctic policy is a peaceful and secure Arctic, with sustainable and resilient communities and reduced environmental and climate impact.
