Over the past 12 months, I’ve had over 100 conversations across We Need to Talk, Married at First Sight, Cheat, and other projects. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned from those interviews, it’s this: Some of the deepest wounds aren’t the ones we bring into relationships — they’re the ones caused inside them. Whether someone was stuck in toxicity, just waking up to it, or finally free of it, three patterns kept showing up: 1. Isolation -- Toxic partners often cut people off from their support system. Sometimes subtly — "your friends don’t really care about you." Sometimes physically — moving them away from loved ones. Either way, the goal is the same: control. 2. The Jealousy Game -- Disguised as concern, it sounds like: “Are you cheating?” “Why are you working late?” “Oh, you like that actor a little too much, huh?” These aren’t questions — they’re jabs. And over time, they erode trust and confidence. 3. Implanted Doubt -- “You’ll never do better than me.” “No one else will love you like I do.” Repeat those words enough, and even the strongest sense of self starts to crumble. Here’s the truth: Abuse doesn’t always show up loudly. Sometimes, it hides behind “I love you.” Sometimes, it sounds like “I’m just trying to protect you.” But love should never cost you your identity. Pay attention to patterns, not just apologies. Real love builds you up. It doesn’t break you down.
