A few weeks ago, Congress overwhelmingly passed legislation to increase sanctions and tariffs on Russia. The President should be using those authorities instead of allowing Russia to export diesel, rake in revenues, and continue its catastrophic war in Ukraine. We can discuss Russia’s return to global energy markets once the war is over, but in the meantime, we need to cut off everything fueling it.

Russia is the aggressor. It launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February twenty-fourth, twenty twenty-two, crossing an internationally recognized border with tanks, missiles, and troops — that's the textbook definition of aggression under international law.
Ukraine was defending its own territory. The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to condemn the invasion, and even countries that stayed neutral on the politics didn't dispute who crossed whose border.
The "NATO expansion" argument gets cited as a cause, but it's a motive claim, not a justification — no treaty or provocation legally permits one state to invade another.

Russia crossed into Ukraine with forces on 24 February 2022. UNGA resolution ES-11/1 (141-5-35) called this aggression violating UN Charter Article 2(4) and demanded full withdrawal. Ukraine's actions fit self-defense under Article 51. Russia's stated motives, including NATO expansion and Donbas claims, explain its rationale but do not supply legal authorization under the Charter as read by the UNGA and ICJ.

UNGA resolution 68/262 (100-11-58) affirmed Ukraine's territorial integrity and declared the 2014 Crimea referendum invalid, calling for non-recognition of any status change.
