Crypto security is often discussed in terms of the cryptography a blockchain uses.
But there is another question worth asking: when that cryptography needs to change, who controls the upgrade, and how much of the process depends on someone else?
That question is becoming increasingly important as the industry prepares for potential threats from quantum computing and advances in mathematical research.
It is also central to Starknetโs exploration of becoming an independent Layer 1 blockchain.
@Starknet already has architectural features that support cryptographic agility, including hash-based STARK proofs and programmable accounts.
However, because Starknet operates as an Ethereum Layer 2, some parts of its security architecture still depend on Ethereum.
Exploring an independent L1 is about examining whether Starknet could gain greater control over those remaining dependencies and manage its security upgrades on its own timeline.
To understand why that matters, we need to look beyond the difference between an L1 and an L2.
