Los Angeles has a truly generational opportunity to send an actual progressive voice to Congress. @Angela4CA is the people’s champion of East LA. πŸ’ͺ🏾

Before Jesse Owens became a household name, there was William DeHart Hubbard, a Cincinnati athlete who had already learned what it meant to compete while being told he did not belong. At Walnut Hills High School, Hubbard excelled in both academics and football. When opponents objected to a Black player taking the field and the school board suspended him, his teammates refused to continue without him. They forfeited the season rather than accept a team that excluded Hubbard because of his race. Track and field eventually gave him a larger stage. Hubbard earned a scholarship to the University of Michigan through a newspaper subscription contest and became the only Black athlete on Michigan’s track team. He won NCAA and Big Ten titles and six consecutive AAU long jump championships. In 1924, he traveled to Paris as one of only four Black athletes on the 299-member U.S. Olympic team. Before the ship sailed, Hubbard wrote to his mother that he would do his best to become the β€œfirst colored Olympic champion.” On July 8, 1924, despite bruising his heel during the competition, he used his final attempt to leap 24 feet 5Β½ inches and win the long jump. He became the first Black athlete to win an individual Olympic gold medal. Hubbard's career did not end with that medal. He later set a world long jump record, tied the world record in the 100-yard dash, founded the Cincinnati Tigers of the Negro American League, and worked in recreation and housing. His achievements helped establish a path later followed by athletes such as Jesse Owens. Hubbard died in 1976, but the significance of what he accomplished in Paris remains enormous. He was not simply the first Black American to win an individual Olympic gold medal. He was one of the athletes who helped make it harder for the country to argue that Black excellence belonged anywhere less than the biggest stage. #BlackHistory

Dory cares more about unlimited arms for genocide abroad than the safety and dignity of the women in his life in America. Sad.
I worked for Obama twice. Never voted for Trump. I’m supporting Mike Rogers in Michigan. El-Sayed’s positions on Israel and American security cross a line for me. Party loyalty has limits. dorybenami.substack.com/p/wh…

Me: "Do you know how many times you've tweeted about Piker since you wrote that tweet [about not tweeting about him] on August 30th?" @mattyglesias: "Probably more than I intended to." Me: "8 times.... you tweeted about Mike Rogers 6 times. So you're tweeting about the streamer you didn't want to talk about more than the Republican candidate you say you want to defeat." Yglesias: "Yeah, that's fair." Me: "Why?" Yglesias: "What do you want me to say? You got me." From my new Zeteo interview with the top centrist pundit - on the left, Michigan, Gaza, immigration, polls, electability, and more: zeteo.com/p/matt-yglesias-me…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Yglesias's posts since Aug 30 include ~5 mentioning Piker and at least 9 mentioning Rogers/Rodgers, not 8 and 6. Hasan posted about Piker ~35 times in the period. x.com/mehdirhasan/st… x.com/ThomasVLinge/s… zeteo.com/p/matt-yglesia… x.com/mattyglesias/s… x.com/mattyglesias/s… x.com/mattyglesias/s… x.com/mattyglesias/s… x.com/mattyglesias/s… x.com/augustcohen4/s…

James Dolan is a disgusting scumbag. I want everyone to realize that the Knicks won a championship in SPITE of James Dolan. Not because of him. The Knicks championship was the result of the accomplishments of our players, our coaches, and our president Leon Rose. Not James Dolan.

President Trump made another unexpected and odd sound during his rally in Iowa on October 22, 2026. I went ahead and added a zoom to that moment. I also slowed the same clip down to 25% speed. I have no idea what is going on with him but he’s had two episodes like this.

Yesterday, by a vote of 6-3 in the NYC Council Health Committee, which I chair, and a vote of 40-7 (w/2 abstentions) by the full body, @NYCCouncil banned horse carriages in NYC. The ban occurring now was driven by the increasing density of our streets and the tragic death of Romanch Mahajan. Next comes the hard part, which is to ensure the well-being of the horses and protections for drivers and workers. As I stated publicly, as Health Chair, I am committed to playing a role in the process as the bill is enacted. Thx to @ChrisMarteNYC for his leadership in taking on the bill and to @SpeakerMenin for her leadership and strategic navigation of this difficult journey that has taken years to accomplish.
The New York City Council voted Thursday to ban horse-drawn carriages, a move that will end an industry that has operated in the city since 1858.
