Day 27: Avoid Unknown Removable Storage Devices Keep your Cyber diet clean 👀 Not every cybersecurity threat comes through the internet. Some can enter your computer through physical devices, including USB drives, external hard drives, and memory cards. Connecting an untrusted device can expose your system to malware or other security threats. Imagine a friend gives you a USB drive containing a presentation they need you to review. That innocent device could contain malicious files that put your device and data at risk. Quick Tip: Only use removable storage devices from trusted sources and scan them with approved security tools where appropriate. Before connecting a USB drive to your computer, what steps should you take to ensure it is safe to use?
Throughout the month of October, I will be engaging in a 31 days Cybersecurity Diet as part of my contribution to the conversations regarding Cybersecurity Awareness. Each day, I will post a basic Cybersecurity topic, share few tips and ask a question. I want to encourage everyone doing Cybersecurity to join me by using the Cybersecurity diet to also educate people about basic Cybersecurity awareness. Let’s continue to spread the word and support the ecosystem to reduce Cybersecurity breaches 💪

With the events of the last couple weeks in Cybersec, I hope it’s getting clearer that AI isn’t coming for ALL your jobs. If anything, AI is creating more RISKS. And more risks means we need more hands on deck to fight the bad guys. #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth

No security incidents. Policies in place. Staff trained. Does that automatically mean you're audit-ready? Not necessarily. Former employees may still have access, supplier risks may go unchecked, and policies may not reflect actual practices. #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth #Audit

The proposal raises important questions about how legitimate interest will be balanced against individuals’ data protection rights. The final wording and Parliament’s position will be key to understanding what this means in practice for AI development and personal data.
‼️ EU governments approved a GDPR change to let companies train AI on Europeans' personal data without consent. It makes AI training a possible "legitimate interest", judged case by case. Parliament must still agree. Max Schrems calls it a "digital expropriation" of Europeans.

Day 24: Encrypt Sensitive Data on Your Devices “Encryption is the secret ingredient to protecting your data 👀” Locking your device is important, but what happens if it’s lost or stolen? Sensitive documents, financial records and personal files could be at risk if someone finds a way to access your device storage. Imagine this: Your laptop is stolen from your bag. It has a login password, but that alone may not protect its stored data from every attempt to access it. Full-disk encryption helps keep your files unreadable without the appropriate key. Quick tip: Check your device security settings and enable supported encryption features, such as BitLocker on Windows or FileVault on Mac. Keep your recovery key somewhere secure and back up important data. Is a strong password enough to protect your files?

Day 25: Check Before Scanning QR Codes “Scan with care, don’t feed scammers 👀” QR codes make everyday tasks easier, from viewing menus to paying for parking. But cybercriminals can replace legitimate codes with malicious ones that lead to fake websites designed to steal your personal or financial information. Imagine this: You park your car and scan a QR code on a parking sign to pay. The website looks convincing, but the code has been replaced with a fake one designed to steal your card details. You could end up paying a scammer instead of the parking operator. Quick tip: Preview the web address before opening it. Check that the domain matches the official site. Look for signs of tampering, and verify payment instructions through an official website or app if anything seems suspicious. What steps can help verify whether a QR code leads to a legitimate website?

Security Alert: PHP2Shell⚠️⚠️ The PHP Project has released fixes for two critical vulnerabilities — CVE-2026-109618 & CVE-2026-109619 — allowing unauthenticated remote code execution. With nearly all PHP versions since 5.4 affected and public exploits in the wild, immediate patching is critical. Update now. Don't make it easy for them. #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth

A difficult call for any organisation, but one that shows how seriously critical software vulnerabilities need to be taken.
Organisations unable to apply key fixes to widely used software should consider taking their websites down, UK and international cybersecurity officials have warned. trib.al/7YksiQT

Meta has been ordered to pay $25 billion in a New Mexico consumer protection case involving claims that Facebook misled users about privacy, third-party data access and content moderation. The case brings the Cambridge Analytica scandal back into focus.

I am asking again. What will it take for the Nigerian government to mandate that its agencies have dedicated, in-house Cybersecurity professionals? And is there a way to ensure that these positions are openly advertised and accessible to qualified, competent professionals through a transparent, merit-based recruitment process?

PHPocalypse flaws existing for a decade, identified with the help of AI, let attackers hijack web servers without logging in. Amazon & Cloudflare reported exploitation attempts days before disclosure. Now the flaws are broadly exploited. Cybersecurity agencies (US, UK, EU, you name it) recommend patching or shutting systems down. Many complied. Dutch parliament and hospitals, French prefectures, Wikipedia’s back end. Japan’s prime minister posted a warning to citizens. In response systems pulled the plug. Elsewhere, hosting firm Railway hacked. Rival Zeabur hacked twice. AI tool LiteLLM hacked again - installing planted password-stealing malware. eMudhra which certifies websites are genuine generated a secret key that was the number 4.
