The Baltic Air Freight Index (BAI00) was higher by a further 3.9% over the week to October 26 as the market continued into its traditional peak season, pushing it 27.1% ahead of a year ago. Rates on the busiest lanes out of China were escalating again, not only on Transpacific lanes to the US but also to Europe. Jet fuel is up 118.5% on the year to October 23, according to the IATA Jet Fuel Price Monitor. With demand yet to reach the top of peak season highs and jet fuel supplies so tight, sources suggest that pressure for rates to rise further is still very much increasing. The Baltic Air Freight Index (BAI00) gained 4.7% over seven days to October 19, putting it 26.4% ahead of a year ago and already above the highest points of the last two peak seasons. Rates were already starting from elevated levels this year, and jet fuel, up 113.7% on the year to October 16 according to the IATA Jet Fuel Price Monitor, is helping put a hard floor under the rates at which airlines will carry cargo. The surge was led by strong increases on the busiest lanes out of China to the US, and to a lesser extent to Europe. The Baltic Air Freight Index eased last week, but it is still ahead of a year ago. Not unusual for Golden Week, when factories in China often shut down. Sources suggest the market is still pretty firm. Nearly all BAI Spot rates out of Hong Kong, Shanghai and Korea were up on the week, particularly over recent days. Sources say e-commerce and other big shippers have locked in peak capacity, while some others, including AI “hyperscalers”, are yet to secure space and could push rates sharply higher. Jet fuel is still rising, up 3.1% on the week to October 9 and 111.2% on the year, according to the IATA Jet Fuel Price Monitor.
