Have you ever imagined walking into a church that was never actually built, but carved out of an entire mountain? Or discovering that a structure created over 800 years ago is still standing and welcoming worshippers today?
Well, this is not a fictional story. It happened in Ethiopia.
In the 12th century, a king named Lalibela had an ambitious dream. He wanted to create a new Jerusalem in Ethiopia, a sacred place where Christians who could not travel to the actual Jerusalem could still experience a spiritual connection to it.
But rather than building churches with bricks, wood and cement, he chose a rather unusual approach.
He commissioned workers to carve them directly out of solid rock.
The project resulted in 11 remarkable churches, each carefully excavated from massive blocks of volcanic rock. Workers carved out the walls, roofs, windows, doors and interiors, essentially creating entire buildings by removing the rock around them.
Some were connected by underground tunnels and narrow passageways, while others featured beautiful religious paintings and intricate carvings.
One of the most remarkable is the Church of St George, designed in the shape of a cross when viewed from above.
Now, here’s the part that makes this story even more incredible.
More than 800 years later, these churches are still standing in Lalibela. They have survived centuries of history, and people still gather there to worship. They continue to attract visitors from across the world and were recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
Think about it: while many modern buildings require extensive construction materials and machinery, an African civilisation created entire churches by carving into solid rock centuries ago.
If you had the opportunity to visit one of these churches, would you be more fascinated by the architecture, the history or the sheer human ingenuity behind its creation?
If 2026 had a trailer, would you be excited to watch the next episode?
