We heard from someone who’s organizing for frontline worker hazard pay at a US museum. They’re wondering: 1. If any museums out there are offering it and if so, how much. 2. If any groups of museum workers are demanding it and what their specific demands are. Reply or dm us!

Minnesota Museum of American Art has fired longtime executive director Kristin Makholm, who rebuilt the organization from near-bankruptcy and led it into a renovated St. Paul landmark. strib.mn/2DDgb3H

If you’re worried about the tone of recent museum protests and your vision of change rests on winning the hearts and minds of executives and board members, please read this thread from @catchatweetdown:

The idea of leaders "listening" or having a sit-down also invites us into the ahistorical delusion that injustice results from the ignorance of leaders (rather than their priorities and class interests) and that transformative change happens because leaders willingly make it so.

A lot of museum professionals are wondering how best to be leaders for positive change in the museum field right now. Is pursuing promotion into upper management and the executive ranks the best way, the only way? Our answer:
Since those positions are rn some of the few w job security, we wouldn’t want to necessarily discourage it, until we have pay equity in all roles. That said, top down reforms haven’t worked. We need more people committed to a rank-and-file strategy of change through unionism.

Was laid off from Walker Art center today and felt like I meant nothing to the museum as FOH staff. I wasn't given resources, help, assistance, invitation back, just platitudes. #MuseumsAreNotNeutral – at Minneapolis, MN

absolute fucking trash. my spouse works at @artsmia which just shed about 40 good paying, necessary museum jobs. the director makes over $700k/year and their endowment, which they refuse to touch, is over $60m. oh and we pay for 40% of the museum w/ the @MplsParkBoard budget!
The @walkerartcenter just laid off about forty minimum wage workers meanwhile the director Mary Ceruti could only bear a pay cut from $500,000 to $450,000. The leadership of the Walker should be ashamed of themselves to put their lowest paid workers on the line right now.

We are in another wave of #museumlayoffs and it’s terrible. Sharing this here to say: you may be the only one on your team laid off, or one of a larger number at your museum. In any case, you are not alone and this is not your fault. What’s happening at museums is happening...
Replying to @hshierholz
Altogether, that’s 34.5 million workers who are either on unemployment benefits, have been approved and are waiting for benefits, or have applied very recently and are waiting to get approved. That is more than one in five workers. 10/

cc museums laying off staff and retaining execs and senior management
If wealthy universities are serious about all these Black Lives Matter statements they are dropping, then they can not countinue laying off staff & service workers (often largely Black) while only protecting faculty jobs (overwhelmingly white) nytimes.com/interactive/2020…
