Yesterday, 23 June, the NCD Alliance, in collaboration with @GATC_int, @TheUnion_TBLH, @worldheartfed, @uicc, and @CR_UK, hosted a workshop at #WCTC2025 titled “Seizing the Moment: How the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs and #MentalHealth Can Shape the Future of Tobacco Control.”
We were pleased to see a strong turnout and active participation, with expert insights and dynamic group discussions.
🎤NCDA Alison Cox highlighted why the upcoming UN High-Level Meeting (#HLM4) is a crucial opportunity for tobacco control advocates and outlined the roadmap toward its Political Declaration.
🎤Leslie Rae Ferat, from GATC & NCDA President, shared our advocacy priorities for HLM4 and initial reactions to the draft Political Declaration—underscoring the need to retain strong targets on tobacco control and health taxes.
🎤Andrew Black, from WHO FCTC Secretariat, provided an overview of progress since the 2018 HLM, stressing the urgent need for greater accountability and multisectoral coordination in tobacco control.
🎤Jo Birckmayer, from @BloombergDotOrg, made a compelling case for reducing tobacco affordability through increased health taxes, especially tobacco taxes, as a proven measure to save millions of lives and generate trillions in economic benefit.
🎤 Paula Johns, from ACT Health Promotion, shared lessons from Brazil’s recent national tax reform, calling for action across risk factors to address structural drivers of NCDs—such as incoherent fiscal policies and market failures that let health-harming industries pass costs onto the public and governments.
🎤 Ralph Emerson Degollacion, from @PHealthAlliance, emphasised the importance of good governance in tobacco control policymaking. He highlighted WHO FCTC Article 5.3 as a key tool for civil society to counter tobacco industry interference and stressed the need for continuous community engagement to prevent policy setbacks.
