At today’s IOTA East Africa Web3 Innovation Summit in Nairobi, Erick Sirali of TradeMark Africa delivered an insightful presentation on TWIN – the Trade Worldwide Information Network — a groundbreaking, decentralized infrastructure that’s actively transforming how cross-border trade operates in East Africa and beyond.
🔹 What is TWIN?
A neutral, not-for-profit, open-source digital infrastructure connecting global trade stakeholders — from customs and ports to exporters and regulators — through secure, interoperable APIs for real-time data exchange at the source.
🔹 Why it matters:
✅ Over 4 billion paper documents are still in use across global trade.
✅ Digitizing trade could unlock $10 trillion in new global economic value.
✅ Today, there are zero globally accepted digital standards for secure trade data exchange. TWIN is stepping into that gap.
📦 In Action — TLIP in East Africa:
Since 2020, TradeMark Africa and the IOTA Foundation have rolled out the Trade Logistics Information Pipeline (TLIP) in Kenya. TLIP connects KRA, KenTrade, and private sector exporters through a unified data-sharing pipeline that reduces port congestion, prevents document loss, and enables error-free trade from Nairobi to global markets like Rotterdam.
🌐 Key TWIN Features Explained On Stage:
1. Enhance, Not Replace: Works with existing systems via APIs.
2. Data Integrity: Real-time, tamper-proof information flow.
3. Data Management: Secure, verified sharing without intermediaries.

Elizabeth Kimani of Sian Flowers, a top Kenyan exporter, was quoted that “in the past, shipments would arrive with documents missing from Nairobi, causing lost business opportunities. With TLIP, every document is in place.”
📍 There is a 2025 technical roadmap already in motion — including deployment pilots, use case testing, and global standard development — TWIN can become core infrastructure for a new era of digital trade.
