this pretty much sums up the difference in conversation concerning ao3

on tumblr, people are participating in a ao3 shutdown fest where ppl write as many things as possible to then post when the site is up and running, and on twt ppl are… well.

Fandom spaces have been infiltrated by people who want to be popular/ treated like influencers for their contributions as opposed to just people excited to be surrounded by other people who like the same thing they like and want to show them the cool shit they wrote.

I feel like some of yall are losing the plot… THE HISTORY OF FANFICTION IS PASSING STORIES BETWEEN FANS THE STAR TREK FANDOM, FOUNDERS OF FANFICTION, WOULD TYPE FICS ON THEIR LITTLE TYPEWRITERS, PHOTOCOPY THEM, AND PASS THEM AROUND AT CONS

I'm not going to get into the discourse as to whether it's okay to post an author's work on gdocs without permission, but this? NOT okay. Do NOT repost an author's work onto another platform, at that point it just becomes theft!

I've been asked if I would follow the movie's events exactly, and... hmm, yes and no? 😅 Like, this is how I imagined their first conversation happening instead of the whole ring-in-the-punch moment from the movie.

😭What is going on with some fic authors?? Treating AO3 like social media where engagement is expected rather than appreciated is wild. As a writer myself, I love kudos and comments, but back in my day, someone downloading your fic to reread offline was the highest praise.

One side of my TL is fic writers complaining about people sharing their work because they won't get “engagement” on AO3, while the other side is writers (myself included) asking readers if they still have copies of our fics/😭

writers who have been procrastinating (me) and have unfinished fics that haven't been updated in a long time (also me) we (me specifically) have an opportunity to catch up and surprise our readers when ao3 is back

am I being too harsh or "without the author gaining any site engagment" is absolutely stupid? ao3 is an archive, not a social media or a fic site. you shouldnt care about "gaining" anything.
