Anaconda? nope its Indian railways at its best.
We really need to start more double decker passenger trains as well, especially for high population density areas.
Your Post must've been GEMS OF OVERPOPULATION.
With locals follows one behind another within minutes, i don't think railways has anything to with this

• Overpopulation
• Poor planning
• Encroachment near railway tracks
• Lack of Quad/Triple tracks
• Lack of proper station planning(short platforms, lack of large pitline)
• Continuing with British-era yard layouts

🚨 One of the most disturbing visuals from India's festive travel rush.
A father, holding his little child, struggles to find space at a train doorway.
On one side, we dream of Vande Bharat, bullet trains and a developed India. On the other, ordinary passengers are forced to risk their lives just to get home.
Development must reach the last passenger, not just the fastest train.
How long will this festive chaos continue? 💔

Despite modernization of Indian Railways this is another harsh side of Indian Railways since 1947

Is Indian Railways locked in an inevitable decline?
Until 2015, passenger traffic grew at a solid 7-8% annually—even as the network choked for want of capacity. Today, the data reveals a clear downward trend in non-suburban passenger-km (with recent data provisional/unaudited):
• 2000-01: 368B
• 2013-14: 990B
• 2018-19: 1,010B
• 2023-24: 950B
• 2024-26: 950–1,000B
The Freight Failure:
Despite two Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs), rail freight is growing at a meager 3% annually. Meanwhile, road transport is booming at 8-12%.
For ten years, I’ve argued that ignoring line capacity would trigger a crisis (See two of my articles below).
With trunk routes operating at a staggering 125% to 150% congestion, the consequences are fully visible: compromised safety, stagnant train speeds, and a shrinking market share.
Safety vs. Premiumization:
Following the tragic Balasore disaster and further fatal accidents across 2023–2024, the Railway Board has slowed new passenger train rollouts to allow for crucial track maintenance. The exceptions? A rapid push for premium Vande Bharat trains and the systematic replacement of non-AC coaches with AC 3-tier options.
The Outlook:
By relying on patchwork fixes (adding 3rd/4th lines) instead of building aggressive new lines across the Golden Quadrilateral, IR is choosing a path of structural decline. The economic impact will be heavy—and India's working and lower-middle classes will bear the brunt of an overcrowded, inaccessible transport system.

Is Indian Railway Locked in an Inevitable Decline?
The 2023 Balasore train tragedy (296 lives lost, 1,200 injured) and subsequent fatal accidents through 2024 exposed crushing congestion on Indian Railways’ trunk routes.
Predictably, this has accelerated the decline of rail’s market share in both passenger and freight transport, while underscoring broader systemic issues like stagnant speeds.
