Before Elon Musk built rockets and electric cars, he crawled inside a steaming-hot industrial boiler for $18 an hour. Almost everyone who started the job quit. He stayed. In 1989, at just 17, Musk arrived in Canada from South Africa with $2-4k and no guaranteed place to stay. His original plan collapsed when he discovered his great-uncle had moved away. So he checked into a youth hostel, bought a $100 bus pass, and travelled across Canada looking for relatives. He eventually reached a wheat farm in Saskatchewan, where he cleaned grain bins, helped build a barn, and celebrated his 18th birthday with a family he had barely known. Later, in Vancouver, he visited an employment office looking for the highest-paying work. The answer was a job cleaning the boilers at a lumber mill. It paid $18 an hour, but the work was brutal. Wearing protective gear, Musk had to crawl through a narrow tunnel and shovel out steaming residue. According to his biographer Ashlee Vance, around 30 workers started that week. By the third day, only five remained. By Friday, Musk was among the final three. He later described it as perhaps the hardest job he had ever done. Before the world knew him as the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, he was a teenager willing to crawl into places most workers refused to enter.
