Taylor Swift paid a reported $360 million for songs she wrote herself. The man who owned them before says her revenge only made him richer. In the video below, Taylor tells her side, and Scooter Braun tells his. She signed with Big Machine at 15. The label owned every master. When her contract ran out in 2018, it offered her a deal: one old album back for every new album she delivered. She walked. A year later, Braun's company bought the whole label for around $300 million. Taylor found out from the news. So she re-recorded everything as "Taylor's Version." Fans switched. Sales of the original Red fell 45%. In 2020, Braun sold her masters to a private equity firm and kept a cut tied to future sales and streams. His words now: "Each time she released one, you saw a spike in the original catalog... We hit every one of our earn-outs." Last year she finally bought them back. She sent her mom and brother to make the pitch, not lawyers. When the call came, she hit the floor. She signed at 15. Was the label robbing a kid, or is a contract a contract no matter how old you are?

Issue of Kpop: does international media/fans have right to say if Kpop artists are being subject to illegal and inhuman treatment under contracts that appear to foster human rights violations? South Korea has billions in financial incentive to keep the system as it is.

Question: when purchase Kpop album or Kpop artist concert ticket, or stream Kpop song, is that $$$ being used to fund abuse of female Kpop artists and to financially incentive male Kpop artists to engage in toxic masculinity? What is your $$$ actually supporting and promoting?

so exposing abusive contracts and worker exploitation is anti-korean? what about being a corrupt criminal, defrauding investors and pocketing hundreds of millions through a pre-ipo scheme? 🤔
Multiple Korean news outlets have labeled The New York Times’ exposé on NewJeans’ contracts as “anti-Korean sentiment.” “The New York Times (western media) is actually attacking K-pop.”

A another reason why newjeans is so hated is bc they disrupted the comfort K-pop stans derive from K-pop by exposing that fans r endorsing, upholding and financing the inhuamn & exploitative industry They ignore the lack of freedom & human rights for their own comfort bubble

One day, perhaps a book will be written about how HYBE's business decisions have been consistently (and allegedly) the WORST possible decisions it could have made every single time -- textbook corporate malfeasance (in my opinion).

What South Korea government, its media and its corporations fail to understand is that fans and consumers spend their time and money because they support artists. If a country/industry/company is not standing by and protecting their artists, fans will turn away.

South Korea prides itself on its K-culture (which includes its Kpop and Kdrama industries), and yet that glamour-filled balloon has definitely burst and the allure and appeal has perhaps been tarnished beyond repair.

hybe wanted people to mock newjeans for signing that contract, but it backfired when people started calling out how inhumane it was. now they're backtracking, shifting the blame to mhj while still defending the contract in the same breath

the New York Times are saying “hybe stripped NewJeans from their basic human rights‼️” and now hybe is saying “we would never do that but, min heejin would 😤” Lol WHATT is going on 😩 Hybe, you’re still at fault here. If min is this evil witch who hates child, why didn’t you step up and say something back in 2022 when this contract was being written? There’s no way Hybe thinks they’re the victims here 😭
