A New Chapter Begins Editor-In-Chief Tariq Bhat

When Omar Abdullah’s government came to power, it appeared to overlook a fundamental reality: Jammu and Kashmir is a Union Territory, with its own constitutional and administrative framework. Instead of focusing entirely on governance, some of his party’s MLAs seemed more interested in questioning and targeting those who stood by their principles and spoke in favour of the country. Critics were repeatedly labelled as BJP supporters or agents of Delhi, even when they had no political association with either. There was also a persistent attempt to project Delhi as an enemy in the public imagination, creating an impression that the Centre and the people of Jammu and Kashmir were somehow on opposing sides. Such political narratives only deepen mistrust and widen the gap between institutions and the public. I personally sent several messages to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, hoping for a mature and constructive response. Unfortunately, the attitude I encountered reminded me of the authoritarian approach associated with Pakistan’s General Asim Munir rather than the democratic openness expected from an elected leader. Today, the party appears to be facing the consequences of its own political conduct. Had Omar Abdullah handled criticism, dissent and differing opinions with greater maturity and dialogue, perhaps the present situation could have been different. A government must understand that criticism is not hostility, questioning is not disloyalty, and Delhi cannot be portrayed as an enemy simply for political convenience.
