Tchaikovsky d otd 1893 - one of the most awful deaths in music history (and it has competition!). I don't believe the suicide theory - I really think it was cholera. But deeply tragic, anyway - and he was planning to compose a cello concerto (after one for flute). Doubly tragic!

Diaghilev's revival of The Sleeping Beauty premiered 2 Nov 1921 in London. 'The Sleeping Princess' was an extravagant, costly production that nearly put the Ballets Russes out of business. There were ominous signs on opening night when stage machinery failed and sets collapsed.

Moscow's Tchaikovsky Concert Hall opened on 12 October 1940 with an all-Tchaikovsky concert. The building was conceived as a new theatre for Vsevolod Meyerhold, only the dissident director was arrested in 1939. This required a change of plan, and 1940 was Tchaikovsky's centenary.
