The night before the @SAASNORTH AI Conference is our favourite part of the whole week in Ottawa 💙 A room full of founders, operators, and investors with no badges, no pitches. Grab a drink, trade stories with someone you’ve only ever seen on LinkedIn, and let the conversation go wherever it goes. Come for a good time and make new connections. Heading to SAAS NORTH AI? Pass holders get a heavily discounted after-party ticket. Get them here: lnkd.in/gBs5Gu-w

On Monday, we brought Montreal founders together for a private dinner. They talked about raising in this market, why build vs. buy conversations with customers have gotten more nuanced, and got into the kind of topics that are hard to bring up with friends, family, or even their own team. These curated dinners are where those conversations happen. Founders bring the questions they’ve been sitting on and get answers from people who’ve been in their shoes or are working through the same thing right now.

The team rebuilt it to help travel creators earn when their readers book. In 2025, it moved into retail, and that side did US$80M in sales in its first year. Last year, Stay22 processed US$1B+ in transactions on US$1.5M of outside money.

@getStay22 turns 10 tonight, the same night it’s named a Montreal Rocketship for the third time. It started in 2016 as a hotel map for esports fans. In 2020, COVID wiped out 90% of its revenue in four months.

3. Not knowing who else is chasing the same problem Thematic investors see every company in their category. Mike knows of around 20 new clinical diagnostics startups going after the same opportunity. Know your competition better than the person you’re pitching.

2. Being vague about the problem and your team Say plainly what problem you’re solving, then show why your team is uniquely placed to build the answer.

1. Using an AI agent to send cold emails Investors can tell right away, and a few things annoy them more. If you want a real relationship with a VC, write something bespoke that explains why they should invest.
