Shocking stuff #nativespeakerism
Meanwhile, over the always interesting not very ethical English teaching jobs in Korea scene, westerners are getting offered up to 500% more than Filipinos (feel free to correct my maths on this) @TeflEquity @ELTAdvocacy @sulaimanjenkins @ParisaMehran
What a load of nonsense this is. So sorry to see @hughdellar, who's spoken out against #nativespeakerism so many times, get attacked in this way: theelttimes.wordpress.com/20…

I think it has to come through solidarity of native speaking colleagues and DoS'. As an industry I think we have to educate our clients on the (uncountable) benefits of NNSTs and promote our trust in them.
Basically - the onus is on all of us.

Remove it from all forms of advertisement with legal ramifications for those who insist on its usage. It's a blatant discriminatory tool that has for too long gone unpoliced. The threat of legal action has a funny way of making many wrongs right.

An open question . . . what would you like to see happen in the fight against #nativespeakerism? What do you think individuals can do to push things forward?
Yet another company to add to the list of those promoting #nativespeakerism Shame that @italki is more concerned with the teacher's first language than their actual ability to teach it. That would certainly benefit students more, but I imagine it's not the company's main concern

An anti-racism this Weds (23rd) reading group discussion plus Q and A with the writer @JPBGerald gives us the opportunity to honestly and openly question the foundations of what we do. @EAP_in_Ireland really looking forward to this. #RaceEAP @EapForSJ

I did the BA in English and TEFL at @covcampus. The non-native students were not allowed to complete the celta even though we had the required IELTS score. I remember my supervisor clearly saying you're a better teacher than some native trainees but...

#endnativespeakerprivilege I used to teach with a great teacher called Kasia who was born in Poland. Once I had to cover an FCE class for her. During the class, I said "So Kasia told me that last week . . . " and before I'd had to finish, one of the students said "Kasia?" ...

#endnativespeakerprivilege Starting this - with this hashtag - as I feel many of you out there have stories to share. Maybe if the stories are heard more, awareness of what native speakerism does to teachers not born in English-speaking countries may develop a bit. Here goes.

So true! It's a bit like saying "near male". Imagine seeing that in a job ad: 'near male strength required'. If it outrages you, so should the terms 'near native' or 'native-like'
For me, "near native" is just as bad as saying "nonnative". Why is "native" the norm/standard by which someone is measured in order to be considered "complete"? As if to say you'll never be considered whole until you acquire "NS" status. Really?
