That mosque is where a student circle became the suicide pilots of 9/11. In San Diego, two other hijackers already inside the United States - Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar - used local mosques to settle in. They got help with an apartment, a bank account, and an imam named Anwar al-Awlaki. In Falls Church, Virginia, those men followed Awlaki to Dar Al-Hijrah, minutes from Washington. From there the road ran to Dulles Airport and the plane that hit the Pentagon. In 2010, Germany raided the Hamburg mosque, banned the group that ran it, and locked the door. Officials called it a recruiting house for holy war. The Islamic Center of San Diego is still open. Masjid Ar-Ribat, Awlaki’s San Diego mosque, is still open.
