A synopsis of Manchester United over the last 13 years.
I wanted to go tactical but honestly there's no point.

a 4000 word commentary on fabian hürzeler's game model.
— everything, everywhere, all at once.
— multi-rhythmic football.
— bulletproof press? not quite.

he's taught me more than any other coach.
& i don't think he's done yet — link below!

I repeat, I like Brobbey.
Perfect example of the back-to-goal improvement I mentioned. There are traits there to be molded to make a very good CF.

I like Brobbey. His underlyings are good. He has lot of good traits. He ranked well on my CF list too. I think it's all there somewhere in him and he will explode under some good manager in some team that plays to his strengths.

Who may have been the most calm CBs on the ball under pressure last Premier League season?
Looking at the percentage of a player's passes that are on the ground when under Medium & High pressure vs when under low pressure, we might be able to estimate that

Michael Carrick coaches the importance of pass-and-move, playing the one-two, taking a positive first touch, and keeping the right weight on the pass so the play never slows down.
This is useful for ball progression (central +wide) + breaking opponent’s lines.

Current Spain, Last year's PSG & Carrick's Boro all could be references to what Carrick sees as the antidote to current football meta - overload roaming playmakers in midfield to pull out M2M markers, progress through center patiently & reduce opponent transitions & set pieces.

I like Andrey Santos. His Chelsea displays went under the radar coz of Caicedo Enzo. Crisp progressor, balances safety & threat, smart mover, intense ball winner. Only issue is lack of span/height. IMO this is Mateus/Scott alternative. AS + a coverage DM (like Tchou) is ideal.
@TheDevilsDNA @tactixology I have not seen sim play at all, what do you guys think about him?

On pivot combinations, assuming we get Santos & Éderson. Mainoo-Santos doable at times. Mainoo-Éderson IMO v lacking. Which just goes to show we def need a defensive expert with good span & coverage & if possible long range passing, to finish the set. Tchou best. Else Sangare.

Every approach is ultimately built on balancing three core concepts: distances, mobility, and tempo.
How a coach thinks about these three variables dictates everything, from strategy and tactics down to player profiling and individual coaching. What kind of distances he wants the team to play with, how much mobility he wants within the structure, and the tempo he wants the game to be played at will shape the entire identity of the team. It even reflects in the personalities of the coaches themselves, and the type of personalities they prefer in players.
Every elite coach accepts certain risks in order to minimise others. An effective team-level strategy cannot exist without balancing these trade-offs. Coaches who try to maximise all three simultaneously struggle to consistently dominate at elite level. There has to be a mechanism that allows the team to control the game, whether through shorter distances, lower mobility, lower tempo, or a balance between them.
As distances, mobility, and tempo all increase simultaneously, the game naturally becomes more chaotic. Players have fewer stable references while making decisions, structural compactness lowers, and the physical demands placed on the team are unreasonable across a full season, especially with European football. This explains a lot about the careers of coaches like Bielsa, Postecoglou, and Pochettino.
Strategically, it becomes almost impossible to sustain a coherent in-possession model and control defensive transitions without balancing these concepts properly. On a team level everything is a trade-off between distances, mobility, and tempo.

📊 u21 midfielders: "stabilizing"
- fwd pass vs. defensive duel success rates
- white data points are u21, green are additional standout non u21 midfielders
- fwd pass %: captures consistent actions, does not reward over-indexing to risk like progressive or long passes, best highlights stability
- def duel %: there generally exists a trade off between def duel volume and success rate at the apex, prioritizing winning actions over volume of actions to balance risk/reward for stability
