Same rules. Different consequences.
When America changed its visa policy for Nigerians in 2025, Nigeria responded with a familiar word: reciprocity.
But what happens when two countries impose the same restrictions, yet one side depends far more on access to the other?
That’s where things get complicated.
Because reciprocity can be used to retaliate.
But it can also be used to negotiate, create leverage and open doors.
From Nigeria’s visa relationship with the US to its approach toward Europe, Kenya and South Africa, the bigger question is:
What does Nigeria actually want its visa policy to achieve?

We explained this in detail here: thenigerianthinker.com/publi…
The results are in for the flagship run of our The Nigerian Thinker Campus Ambassadors program.
1,040 applications. 40 selected.
From the beginning, our goal wasn't simply to recruit campus ambassadors. It was to find students who are curious, thoughtful, resourceful, and already creating meaningful impact in their communities.
So we designed a selection process to do exactly that.
Beyond the résumé and video submission, we looked for evidence of initiative, leadership, and a genuine commitment to thoughtful conversations on campus.
The applications told a fascinating story.
