PAPSS just reported transaction volumes up about 1,000% year on year. Africa is building instant cross-border payments at a pace the rest of the world is watching. Here is the question I would put in front of every board that touches these rails. The payments are instant and irrevocable. In parts of Central Africa, foreign exchange rules still rely on paperwork before a transfer. Funds can move before fraud is detected. And growth against what? No absolute baseline has been published, so adoption and exposure cannot yet be told apart. Africa can lead on instant cross-border payments. Leading means building traceability in before the volume arrives, not retrofitting it after the first loss. Instant settlement is a feature. Irrevocable settlement is a risk decision. #TheSundayCISO #CrossBorderPayments #PAPSS #FinancialCrime Sources: ISS Today, Instant payments outpace Central Africa's anti-money laundering controls (17 September 2026) · Tech.africa, PAPSS growth (September 2026)

Kenya's national cybercrime committee reported something this quarter that every board should sit with. Cyber events recorded by the national response team fell 30%, to 2.3 billion. Over the same reporting period, 70 of the 102 reported computer fraud cases landed between May and July, more than double the three months before. Mobile money was the single largest scheme. Nearly one in four cases had a telecom or SIM element. Event counts measure noise. Fraud cases measure harm. When attackers move from volume to precision, a quieter dashboard can sit above a rising loss curve. And when the failure point sits between the bank, the mobile operator and the customer, who owns the control? Fewer alerts is not the same as fewer victims. #TheSundayCISO #MobileMoney #FraudRisk #CyberMetrics Sources: Techweez, Kenya mobile money fraud report (24 August 2026)

Zimbabwe's data protection regime went live this month with a detail that should get every CEO's attention: non-compliance can mean up to seven years in prison, personally, for the chief executive. That's a real accountability shift. For years, governance frameworks have argued that cybersecurity needs to be the CEO's problem, not just the CISO's. Now there's a law that makes that literal. Here's the tension nobody's naming. Licensing as a data controller and certifying a Data Protection Officer already costs over US$1,300, before a single security control is funded. For a small operator, that's not a compliance line item. That's a decision about whether to register at all. Personal criminal liability changes attention. It does not, by itself, change capability. A law that jails the CEO but prices out the small operator hasn't made the ecosystem safer. It's made the risk harder to see. #TheSundayCISO #DataPrivacy #CyberGovernance #ExecutiveAccountability

800 million people worldwide still have no legal identity. More than 400 million of them are in Sub-Saharan Africa. That's the headline everyone will repeat this week. Here's the part worth sitting with. ID4Africa's own framing for International Identity Day just shifted, from closing the enrollment gap to asking whether identity systems are secure and trusted enough to actually be used. A country can hit its enrollment target and still have a system nobody trusts at the moment it counts, opening an account, crossing a border, proving a claim. Africa holds half the world's identity gap. That also means it holds half the opportunity to design trust in from the start, rather than retrofit it later the way older, fully enrolled systems elsewhere are now being forced to. Enrollment counts people. Trust counts. #TheSundayCISO #DigitalIdentity #DigitalTrust #AfricaTech

Two things happened quietly this year that deserve more attention than they got. Mastercard launched a pan-African Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, starting in South Africa and Nigeria, to run shared threat intelligence for the continent's financial sector. Separately, telecom operators are being positioned, through their RICA identity data and mobile money scale, as Africa's most likely digital identity providers, ahead of the banks everyone assumed would lead. Two of the most sensitive trust functions a continent can have, threat intelligence and identity, are increasingly built and run by private commercial entities. Efficient, yes. Fast, yes. But neither Mastercard nor a telco answers to a parliament. Private infrastructure can move faster than governments. It cannot substitute for a public answer to who's accountable when it fails. #TheSundayCISO #DigitalSovereignty #DigitalIdentity #AfricaCyberSecurity

Sometimes, all someone needs is for you to say, “I believe in you.” A young man reached out to me recently and asked if I could help him prepare for an upcoming job interview. He could have been too shy to ask. He could have thought, “He’s a big boss. His CV is miles ahead of mine. Why would he have time for me?” But he reached out. And I’m so glad he did. Today, he sent me a message saying he had received an employment offer from the company he interviewed with. 🎉 That message meant more to me than he probably realizes. Because we all started somewhere. Before the titles, the boardrooms, the years of experience and the impressive CVs, we were engineers, graduate interns, young professionals and people simply trying to figure things out. And along the way, someone opened a door for us. Someone answered a question. Someone reviewed our CV. Someone gave us advice. Someone believed in us - sometimes knowingly, sometimes without even realizing the impact they were making. I have been fortunate to experience that in my own journey. Now, I want to be that person for someone else. Not because I have all the answers, but because I know how powerful it is when someone a few steps ahead takes the time to look back and say: “Come, let me help you.” So to every young professional reading this: Don't be afraid to reach out. Reach out to the people you admire. Reach out to those whose journey inspires you. Ask questions. Seek mentorship. Ask for guidance. The worst they can say is “No,” or “I don't have the time.” And if they say no, keep moving. Someone else may say yes. And when you eventually get to where you are going, don't forget to look back. Lift someone. Open a door. Share your knowledge. Be the person who pushes the light forward. Because success isn't only about how high you climb. It's also about how many people you help rise with you. Today, I'm happy to say: I have one success story. And this screenshot is a small piece of evidence that sometimes, a little time, encouragement and belief can change someone's trajectory. ❤️ To the young man — congratulations. Go and make the most of this opportunity. Your journey has only just begun. 🚀 #Mentorship #Leadership #YoungProfessionals #CareerGrowth #PayItForward #PurposeDrivenLeadership #TheSundayCISO #CybersecurityLeadership #Africa #NeverForgetWhereYouStarted

4.56 billion cyber threat events hit Kenyan infrastructure in the last quarter of 2025. That's a 441% surge, in three months. At the same time, regulators across the region are telling institutions the right thing: treat cybersecurity as governance, not a compliance checklist. Ghana's Cyber Security Authority made exactly that case this week. Here's the problem nobody's naming. Governance moves in budget cycles and board calendars. Threat volume just moved five-fold in a quarter. You cannot govern your way out of a velocity mismatch with better paperwork. The real board question isn't "are we compliant." It's "can our governance model move at the speed of the threat at all." #TheSundayCISO #CyberGovernance #EastAfrica #ThreatIntelligence

Kenya's central bank just fined eleven commercial banks KES 191 million over compliance and cybersecurity failures. Nigeria's CBN has been revoking licenses as part of a broader sector clean-up. Ghana issued a revised cybersecurity directive in March. Three separate national stories. One continental pattern: cybersecurity has stopped being something regulators ask about in an audit, and started being something they act on. If your last cyber review was framed as a compliance exercise, that's worth revisiting. The bar just moved from "did you document a control" to "did the control actually work," and regulators are now willing to pull licenses over the answer. #TheSundayCISO #CyberGovernance #FintechRegulation #AfricaFinance

Nigeria just posted a 51% drop in digital payment fraud losses. On paper, that's a win. But the 2024 baseline it's being measured against was inflated by a single ₦31.1 billion incident tied to one entity. Strip that out, and the "improvement" story gets a lot more complicated. Meanwhile, the CBN is opening national payment rails to non-bank providers from H2 2026. New access points, new interoperability, new surface area, right as everyone is celebrating a falling number. Boards love a percentage. They rarely ask what it's a percentage of. #TheSundayCISO #CyberRisk #FraudPrevention #AfricaFintech
