“Trim from the Top” sounds good…
…until SEC(def)WAR proposes yet another joint warfighting command - this one for drone warfare - with a giant, bloated bureaucracy to support it.
And yet simultaneously the SEC(def)WAR pitches the creation of ANOTHER Joint Command - and the dozens of General/Flag-officers to lead it.
We need fewer commands, not more. Congress should immediately block any funding of another HQ bureaucracy
I don’t believe the U.S. Army has any metric for true merit, or measuring warfighting ability. I welcome the Army’s eventual admission of that gap - but hope the next 50 years prove me wrong.
The U.S. Army’s erstwhile “Commander’s Assessment Program” was a colossal failure. A “toxic” leadership screener that couldn’t differentiate between hard and corrosive leadership types, so it screened out both.
What remained were leaders who could go along to get along. Leaders who could be nice and agreeable. Or leaders smart enough to fake it through the test and be themselves after.
Some of the best combat leaders I’ve ever known, failed that assessment and left the Army.
What’s worse is that it didn’t even focus on one’s ability to fight. Was just a psychologists fun house one had to maneuver through.
Now that nonsense is gone, and officers need to prove they can actually fight with the Joint Warfighter Evaluation.
It will assess true merit. And doesn’t care if you’re mean sometimes.
