“When you try to motivate people to do things that they struggle to do, you also send them the not-so-subtle message that you don't think they're trying hard enough.”
It can be frustrating when people do things we don't want them to. A friend cancels plans at the last minute. A child refuses to get dressed for school. Before long, resentment sets in. The temptation is to push harder. More reminders, more rules, more consequences. But the techniques we use to get people to alter their behavior are often strikingly ineffective. This week, psychologist @stuartablon explains why these methods fail, and offers better ways to help the people we care about make lasting change.

If gentle parenting is too soft & FAFO too harsh (& neither has data that says they are effective btw), there is an evidence-based alternative that balances clear expectations & boundaries w/ empathy. It's called Collaborative Problem Solving @ThinkKids

We all understandably want to move on from the impacts of the pandemic, but our schools still feel them loudly every day - and behavioral problems are the biggest challenge according to superintendents here in Massachusetts. @ThinkKids can help!

Gentle parenting has elements of our approach @ThinkKids, but the 2 two are quite different. Collaborative Problem Solving is alternative to authoritarian or permissive parenting that allows us as parents to be responsive & empathic w/o being pushovers!

@stuartablon @ThinkKids joined me to discuss how parents can use collaborative problem-solving as a strategy to help resolve problems in the home or at school instead of yelling, shaming, giving up, or giving in on a child with ADHD. He covers it a lot in a short time. Enjoy!
