Those Who Serve: Administrative Supervisor Garcia
Behind the scenes, Admin Supervisor Garcia helps keep the department running smoothly by supporting staff, solving problems, and keeping countless details on track. Her dedication and willingness to help wherever needed make a meaningful difference across the department!
Get to know her. 👇
What drew you to being an Administrative Supervisor?
What drew me to becoming an Administrative Supervisor was really wanting to continue learning and growing within the organization. I had only been in law enforcement for about a year when I became a supervisor. I started as a Records Specialist, so I was excited for the opportunity to take on new tasks, learn new responsibilities, and challenge myself. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work in every division within the police department, which has allowed me to become well-rounded and understand how all those areas work together. I think that experience helps me support my fellow Administrative Supervisors and others when they need an extra hand, and I really enjoy being someone they can rely on.
Can you share a moment when you felt like you really made a difference?
I don’t know that I have one specific moment that stands out, but being part of our Peer Support Team has been really fulfilling for me. Knowing that I can be there for my coworkers and friends during difficult times and simply be someone who listens, supports them, and helps them feel acknowledged, means a lot to me. I hope that, in some small way, being there for someone when they need it makes a difference in their life.
If you weren't in this role, what would you be doing?
I would probably still be working in healthcare! Much like working in the police department, healthcare is an environment where every day can be different. You never quite know what the day will bring, but most importantly, you get to be of service to others. I think that sense of purpose is something I’d always want to have in my career, no matter what field I’m working in.

You may have seen a large police presence near the 10200 block of Ura Lane last night on Oct. 17.
Just before 5:30 p.m., officers responded to an apartment complex for a disturbance between individuals known to each other. While officers were on their way, they learned one person had reportedly been stabbed. Officers contacted the victim, an adult male, who had non-life-threatening injuries. Officers learned the suspect had gone inside an apartment.
The suspect refused to come out. While officers were ordering him to surrender, a shot was fired from inside the apartment. No one was hit. SWAT responded, and the 37-year-old suspect surrendered. He is in custody.
Residents were asked to shelter in place during the response, and that has since been lifted. There is no ongoing threat to the community.

NEWS RELEASE: Suspect in Thornton officer shooting arrested
Luis Arebalo, the suspect in the Oct. 11 shooting of a Thornton Police officer, is in custody.
On Oct. 13 at about 5:30 p.m., Thornton Police received multiple calls from community members reporting they had seen Arebalo walking near Riverdale Road and 120th Avenue. Officers responded, and Arebalo was taken into custody without incident. He did not have any apparent injuries at the time of his arrest.
Formal charges will be determined by the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
On Oct. 11, at about 9:30 p.m., Thornton Police officers responded to the 12800 block of Ulster Street. During the incident, Arebalo fired multiple rounds at officers, striking one officer. A second officer returned fire. Arebalo fled the scene.
In the hours after the shooting, SWAT, K9 teams and patrol officers searched the area within the perimeter, supported by drones, a Denver Police Department helicopter and a Colorado State Patrol airplane.
Over the next two days, investigators searched Arebalo’s vehicle and the surrounding area, followed up on tips and worked with federal partners and neighboring jurisdictions to locate him. Arebalo’s name and photo were released to the public, and Metro Denver Crime Stoppers offered a reward of up to $4,000 for information leading to him.
The injured officer has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
We are grateful to the residents who recognized Arebalo and called 911. Those calls led directly to a safe arrest. Thank you also to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers and everyone in the community who shared his information over the past two days.
We are proud of the officers who responded that night and remained diligent under extremely dangerous circumstances. We are also proud of the investigators who worked around the clock to bring this to a safe end. Our dispatchers also played a critical role, managing a high volume of emergency calls, coordinating resources and keeping officers informed throughout.
Thornton Police Department is especially grateful to the agencies that assisted with K9 and area searches, perimeter support, air and drone support, SWAT and crisis negotiation, and handling calls for service in Thornton during the incident:

Those Who Serve: Victim Advocate Ramirez
October is #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth, and Victim Advocate Ramirez specializes in supporting survivors of domestic violence. She is dedicated to helping them understand their rights, explore their options and connect with resources and support.
Learn more about her. 👇
What do you enjoy most about being a Victim Advocate?
I enjoy being able to support people during some of the hardest moments in their lives. I like to help them feel heard and supported. I want them to feel less alone and remind them they're not going through it by themselves.
What is one misconception about domestic violence you wish more people understood?
One huge misconception I've learned about domestic violence is that it isn't always obvious. Abuse can be hidden, lonely and scary. A lot of the times survivors are unsure of where to get the help they need, no one should have to go through it alone.
What would you say to someone who is worried about a friend or family member experiencing domestic violence?
Be their biggest support system, listen without judgment and remind them you are there for them. If you're not sure how to support them, victim services are here to help as well.
If you weren't a Victim Advocate, what would you be doing?
I would probably be working with children in the welfare system.
