WHY THE 1919 RACE RIOTS HAPPENED So, during WW1 a huge amount of the merchant navy got pulled into the navy to fight the war. The numbers were made up by coloured sailors. Those coloured sailors were paid way more due to wage inflation in the merchant navy during the war. This attracted the white women of the ports. The white sailors got back after the war to find there was no accomodation, the coloured sailors had made out like bandits while they were away dying and had been schtooping their women and there were not enough jobs to go round. Prior to WW1, there had been practically no coloured population of the ports, so this was all a bit of a shock to the returning white sailors. This led to 8 months of riots across the country, and was a key reason why the Attlee government took the attitude they did with the West Indian presence in Britain after WW2.
