‘Arsenal's defensive discipline deserves admiration, their gamesmanship considerably less.’
Perfectly sums up Arsenal
⚽ VAR, Tribalism and the Great Refereeing Excuse
The reaction to Liverpool's defeat against Arsenal has exposed something deeply troubling about modern football. Supporters are so consumed by defending their own colours that the officials responsible for enforcing the laws escape the scrutiny they deserve.
Arsenal fans have been quick to remind me that Trey Nyoni was fortunate to avoid punishment for his early challenges. Jurrien Timber's sustained shirt pull on Alexander Isak warranted a penalty. Both grievances deserve consideration. Both can be legitimate.
Then came the extraordinary inconsistency surrounding Noni Madueke. Alexis Mac Allister undoubtedly exaggerated minimal contact, yet we've witnessed dismissals for similar confrontations. Mac Allister was booked, Timber received a caution for his involvement, Madueke escaped one despite already being booked. Where is the consistency?
And what of Mac Allister's theatrics? Had Andoni Iraola, frustrated by Isak remaining upright despite being fouled, urged his players at half-time to make contact impossible for officials to ignore? We cannot know, but the possibility raises an uncomfortable question. Would such an instruction explain Mac Allister's reaction, even if it could never entirely excuse it?
Must players now collapse theatrically before officials recognise an offence? Has football adopted cricket's appeals system, where justice depends upon the enthusiasm of the complainant?
Even Andy Madley's apparent jovial exchanges with Arsenal players emerging for the second half raised eyebrows. Perhaps an entirely innocent moment, but such familiarity inevitably attracts attention when confidence in officiating is already fragile.
Arsenal's defensive discipline deserves admiration, their gamesmanship considerably less.
Yet Arsenal supporters bear no responsibility for refereeing decisions. Neither do Liverpool supporters. Their endless arguments and snipes at me and others on social media merely divert attention from those entrusted with applying the laws.
VAR promised clarity and consistency. Instead, we have acquired another expensive layer of confusion, producing decisions that remain bewilderingly subjective.
If technology cannot deliver meaningful improvement or accountability, football must seriously question what it has sacrificed to accommodate it.

Arsenal will walk the title. The best team in the country defensively by a million miles.
And utterly abysmal to watch.
Each to their own, but I couldn't be putting up with that every week even if it means winning stuff.

Ian Wright and Jamie Carragher on Liverpool not receiving a penalty for a shirt pull on Isak:
Carragher: 'You have the best number 9 in the league, 5 yards out from goal, and he's pulled back, that is the clear stopping of a goal scoring opportunity'
Wright: 'As an Arsenal fan, that absolutely has to be a penalty. No point saying he didn't do enough to get it; he shouldn't have to make a song and dance in order to be given a clear penalty'
Carragher: 'VAR needs to do its job'
Absolutely spot on from these two lads; even Ian, as an Arsenal fan, is claiming it should have been a penalty. What a farce to try and get Arteta his first win at Anfield...
Arsenal play ugly, negative, and borderline cheating style of football but it’s effective I guess ? 🤷♂️
The thing about Arteta is that obviously people aren’t going to like rival managers but the big ones are all respected. I don’t think anyone respects Arteta, the way he acts, the way he plays all of it.

It is funny that Man City started with 100m plus players today and not once were their price tags mentioned
I can count at least 6 occasions on Wednesday night where they mentioned how much Wirtz, Barcola and Isak cost

Aston Villa's kit is really nice isn't it? Also their pitch is absolutely beautiful, immaculate lines and a gorgeous shade of green.
And their fans sing so well, don't they? Like a Welsh choir but even nicer and more melodic.

He said it about my club.
And in a dressing room, around 7pm tonight players wearing Claret & Blue can only be affected by players wearing White & Black. That's the only way a club ever breaks its ceiling.
If you honestly believe Carragher, Henry, Lineker or Shearer could say anything that would influence a player or manager to join or not join Aston Villa as oppose to millions of pounds and the perception of greener grass, then I genuinely believe you are do far removed from how football works, it's stunning to see.
Unai Emery moved from Villareal to Villa despite Champions League qualifying for the former because he was paid 5 times more by Villa and the size of Villa meant potentially greater trophy rewards.
If you don't understand that Manchester United are perceived and will be for possibly forever as a bigger football club therefore bigger potential rewards if successful then you don't just understand football, you don't understand basic human behaviour and it's desire to progress, even if that progression is perceived rather than a reality.
