How many of you think Peter Navarro, with his brainchild on trade and tariffs should have stayed with him in the faculty lounge at UC Irvine?

Critical phone call today “Negotiators working to end the Russia-Ukraine war have already discussed "dividing up certain assets,” US President Donald Trump said Sunday as he announced he planned to speak to Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Tuesday." Hmm. Sounds fimilar. 19th Century great power politics. As Churchill said we cut and trim states like Dutch cheeses. I hope and know Trump knows that Putin may want to "divide up certain assets" elsewhere like Poland, Germany or Belgium. We are back to the old 19th century but this time with

In our country acceptance into various groups hinges on conformity to specific linguistic norms: word choices, references, jokes, and even the ability to acknowledge certain truths are scrutinized for ideological purity. This environment creates a minefield where deviation from accepted norms risks exclusion and ostracization. The pervasive influence of totalizing ideologies poses a grave threat to our liberties, personal freedoms, and our ability to challenge prevailing social norms. This danger persists regardless of the outcome of any election with implications for the American polity that are profound and regrettable. Thoughts?

This is a memorial to Benjamin and Jeremy Wise. Two Hendrix College brothers who could have gone to graduate school and Med school but instead joined to serve our country after 9/11. One a seal and the other a ranger. They were both killed in Afghanistan defending our nation. We created place with purpose #edulorics to recognize them through placemaking. I honor the incredible sacrifice of the Wise family.

Have you noticed….. Today’s political landscape, exhibits concerning parallels with what Hannah Arendt called a totalitarian impulse. Arendt argued that totalitarian ideologies, regardless of their specific political leanings share a common strategy of enforcing their own language and thought control mechanisms to create “in group out group” dynamics. ————————————- This approach serves an agenda by preserving, purifying, and sanctifying power through subtle coercion and control. Currently, elements from both ends of the political spectrum employ language manipulation, misinformation, and word policing as tools of dominance and intimidation. This phenomenon, identified by Arendt, goes beyond traditional political opposition to encompass broader societal control through terror, disinformation, and self-censorship. It's a strategy aimed not just at political adversaries but at subjugating the entire population. In today's discourse, acceptance into various groups hinges on conformity to specific linguistic norms: word choices, references, jokes, and even the ability to acknowledge certain truths are scrutinized for ideological purity. This environment creates a minefield where deviation from accepted norms risks exclusion and ostracization.

Democratic and Republican parties share in the hope of Language and Thought Police - both both have elements with totalitarian impulses #musk #hendrix #drury Hannah Arendt says a totalitarian ideology and the role assigned to it, is its own preservation, purification and sanctification in the apparatus of control and hidden coercion. At this moment, such ideology form is shared by the left and the right. And with language and words (and their revisions and purifying) totalitarianism has discovered a means of dominating and terrorizing human beings from within. For Arendt totalitarianism differs from other forms of political oppression .. it applies terror, misinformation, power, self censorship to subjugate mass populations rather than just political adversaries. Our liberty, personal freedom and ability to speak truth to power are at risk in a dangerous nation and world. whether or not it is Harris and the hard left or Trump and hard right …… Any way it goes we need a new Hope other than these two. A hope beyond now

WSJ “Trail Program offers Cash for tips on Fraud, Bribery” by Dylan Tokar. Tipsters who report on an “employer or another to the government are paid cash” to help clean things up. Once governments set these types of organizational practices up and formalizes them then the state can use it to deploy its paid agents to report on fellow citizens for any cause. Hobbes said the Leviathan (the state) seeks power after power for the sake of power in the name of doing good.

The opening Olympic Ceremony usually features something of the art, culture, music of the host country as well as a unifying theme around the history of the games. The French have presented not French culture or European culture but rather a mockary and dismissal of it. Not to be taken seriously? It’s art? It reflects well on the openness and tolerance and inclusion of France as a world citizen? I don’t think so. This so self absorbed. And shows a French neurosis, self loathing, and fear. And then what is up with the horse? In trying to critique the Old Europe and to celebrate the new Europe the French have just demonstrated the identity crisis plaguing the West and the French in particular.
