🇬🇧 It’s time to say adiós to inheritance tax
- 🇪🇸 Madrid shows that cutting IHT can help wealth and talent grow
- 🇸🇪 Sweden learnt the hard way that death taxes don't pay
- IHT is unpopular, unfair and economically destructive

CPS paper, literally this morning: the govt is relying on the PuFins to borrow way more while keeping it off the books, thanks to the way they changed the fiscal rules
John Healey:
🚨 Oh dear, it sounds like they're actually doing it.
💸 Frittering it away and storing up trouble for the future.
💷 'Off balance sheet' borrowing is still borrowing. Taxpayers will pay the price long after this government has been shown the door.

Labour madness!
Pedagogically explained by @TimDier.

Good paper from @TimDier on why the 'PuFins' - like the National Wealth Fund or British Business Bank - are looking less like growth engines and more like the new PFI. Time to clip their wings? cps.org.uk/research/pufins-t…

Hiding debt doesn’t make it disappear.
CPS Fellow @TimDier explains why Labour’s approach to measuring debt risks encouraging more borrowing and spending - leaving taxpayers to pick up the bill.

📣 Every now and then, someone comes along whose expertise, character and outlook uniquely fit them for a role and they secure it.
🙏🏻I’m thankful @griffitha is Shadow Chancellor and I hope one day he is the real thing, because he will be the real thing indeed.
💡One to follow.
Not properly recognising liabilities is one of the two pathologies of every financial scandal. (The other is recognising revenue which never turns into cash flow).
When Rachel Reeves changed the headline debt target in October 2024, she did more than tweak an accounting rule.
By switching from measuring public sector net debt (PSND ex BoE) to public sector net financial liabilities (PSNFL), ministers created a channel to spend the same taxpayer money through Public Financial Institutions, or “PuFins”.
Debt is still debt but under Labour’s fiddled measure, spending via a PuFin barely registers against the fiscal rules.
As this excellent report from the Centre for Policy Studies shows, had the old target been kept, the October 2024 Budget would have broken the debt rule by £6 billion. Under the new one, it passed with £16 billion to spare.
Expect next week’s budget to include more examples of this dodge.

The next PFI scandal in the making?
- PuFin smoke and mirrors are hiding borrowing 😮💨
- The state is a poor investor investor 📉
- Simpler and lower taxes are the answer 💷

Instead of nannying wannabe entrepreneurs at taxpayers expense, why not just make the system easier for them to run a small business?
Exclusive:
Benefit claimants will be given advice on how to set up their own businesses, turning side hustles into full-time work.
A pilot scheme starting next year will give young entrepreneurs advice on setting up a business bank account, registering for VAT and putting together a business plan
Pat McFadden tells @Telegraph that young people want to “do their own thing” and that new businesses are one way of tackling the NEETs crisis.

This in today’s @FT from someone who was an adviser to Andy Burnham is quite the comment:

We are living beyond our means, passing on an ever-growing mountain of debt to the next generation.
It must change.
We Conservatives will be honest, cut welfare and wasteful spending to get our country back on track.

The Treasury must be wary of giving us another flawed ‘Project Fear’ in reverse. It’s credibility will be on the line.
Cheaper energy would do far more for the UK economy than another decade of debating closer links to the low-growth EU.

Timely findings from @TaxFoundation and @CPSThinkTank today given the headlines about taxing family businesses - we are steadily becoming a worse and worse place to create and pass on wealth cps.org.uk/research/a-wealth…

🚨 Labour are determined to destroy the millions of family businesses across the UK.
Most are small businesses that, like farms, are already being crushed.
As Chancellor, I would back our family businesses.
We Conservatives will scrap Labour’s Family Business Death Tax.

Our country’s fiscal situation is in a perilous state, and our debt trajectory shows no meaningful sign of improving. The sooner we recognise this, the better.
This is the key test for the Chancellor's upcoming Budget.

The unintended consequences of this are mind numbingly obvious.
Family firms will under invest in order to save for future tax bills. Or they'll get sold off rather than passed on. Long-term investment, skills and jobs evaporate.
Does Healey know how prosperity is generated?
