Saturday, May 22, 2010, at 8:52 p.m. Shawnee Fire Department's 'Truck 71' is dispatched on a residential fire alarm at a home in the 13400 block of West 75th Court. The responding firefighters reported heavy black smoke visible from 71st Street and Pflumm Road. Dispatchers were also receiving multiple 911 calls from neighbors reporting there was possibly an elderly couple and a dog inside the house. This new information prompted dispatchers to upgrade the call to a full alarm house fire, which included Shawnee and Lenexa firefighters. Firefighter John Glaser and the Captain of 'Truck 71' forced their way into the front of the house to begin a search and rescue. The pair located a black Labrador Retriever a short time later and rescued the dog. Firefighter Glaser carried the dog out into the front yard, where it was eventually transported to an area emergency vet clinic. After rescuing a family's dog, Firefighter John Glaser and his Captain rushed back inside the house to resume their search for anyone else inside. A short time later, Firefighter Glaser and his Captain became separated, and a 'Mayday' was declared at 9:12 p.m. A Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) made up of firefighters was deployed inside the house to search for the missing firefighter. Firefighter Glaser was found about 10 minutes later and carried out of the house to a waiting ambulance. He was rushed to the nearest hospital, but it was too late. John Glaser was not only a firefighter. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, a husband, son, brother, and father to two children. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.
