Another major DC911 mistake late last night delayed firefighters responding to a cardiac arrest. Dispatchers sent firefighters from more than five miles away instead of the closest one just five blocks away. Radio traffic shows that Engine 17 in the Brookland neighborhood struggled to convince a dispatcher that they had screwed up by sending them to the cardiac call three blocks north of Nats Park. Compounding the problem, two minutes after the botched dispatch, OUC sent the closest engine, Engine 7, to a different call. It took four minutes for Engine 18 from Barracks Row to be dispatched to the cardiac arrest. They were one of the many engine companies considerably closer than Engine 17. It appears Medic 7 got to the patient first and worked the cardiac arrest themselves until Engine 18 arrived. A well-trained DC911/@OUC_DC dispatcher should notice immediately that something’s likely amiss if the dispatch computer assigned Engine 17 to an EMS call in the Navy Yard neighborhood. This botched assignment would have passed through at least two dispatchers and a supervisor. Everyone was oblivious to the problem.
