Editor's Take: The offense runs through Giannis. The roster isn't built to let it work yet. The usage is real. Through four games he posted a 32.9% usage rate, the highest on the team, and took 19.8 shots a game. Davion Mitchell, the primary ballhandler, was at 19.8%. Five games in, Giannis is averaging 27.6 points, 11.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists on 56.7% shooting. Mitchell leads the team with 7.6 assists. That's a heavy load, and he's carrying it. The problem is everything around him. Giannis and Bam both live in the paint. With the two of them on the floor, Miami was minus-31.6 per 100 possessions through four games. Bam is down to 14.2 points on 42.6% shooting and 15.8% from three, and CBS has his two-point attempts at their lowest since his third season. The shooters brought in to open the floor haven't delivered: Klay Thompson is at 32.4% from three and Tim Hardaway Jr. at 25%. Over the first three games, the starting five of Mitchell, Thompson, Wiggins, Giannis and Bam was outscored by 47.1 per 100, the worst mark of any lineup with 30-plus minutes. The result was an 0-4 start, Miami's first since 2007-08. Atlanta showed what works. Giannis had 24 and 18, Miami scored 70 points in the paint and went 11 of 29 from three, and the Heat won 129-117. The stakes are clear. Miami gave up Herro, Jaquez, Ware, Jakucionis, the No. 13 pick and two unprotected firsts. Giannis has a 2027 player option and can't sign an extension until Jan. 6. His title odds drifted from 30-1 to 55-1 and his MVP odds from 14-1 to 16-1. What has to happen: - Giannis: Screen and short-roll for Bam instead of crowding the same block. Make quicker kickouts, and no more fouling out, like he did at Charlotte. - Spoelstra and the front office: Stagger the bigs so each one gets his own minutes. Put Giannis at the five with four shooters around him. Find a real shooter or a creator before the deadline. - Heat fans: Drop the "trade Bam" talk. The fit is the fixable part.
