Famed Bangladeshi Actor Turned Politician Asaduzzaman Noor Turns 80 Today - His Third Birthday Behind Bars, Without Charge. One of #Bangladesh’s most celebrated actors and cultural personalities, Asaduzzaman Noor, turns 80 today. But there is little cause for celebration. This is his third consecutive birthday behind bars. Arrested on 15 September 2024, Noor has now spent 776 days in detention without being formally charged with any crime. Widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s most popular television drama actors, Noor later entered politics and served as a Member of Parliament and Minister of Cultural Affairs under the Awami League government. Following the political change in August 2024, Noor was arrested in connection with several murder cases arising from the violence surrounding the July–August protests. Although he has managed to secure bail in some cases, his continued detention has been ensured through his repeated re-arrests in additional criminal cases. Noor is among hundreds of former MPs, ministers, political leaders and activists affiliated with the Awami League who have been arrested since August 2024. Like many of his former colleagues, he remains in prolonged pre-trial detention without formal charges being brought against him. For more than two years, Noor has endured difficult detention conditions. Despite his advanced age and multiple health issues, his repeated applications for bail have been unsuccessful in securing his release. As Asaduzzaman Noor turns 80, his continued incarceration raises serious questions about prolonged pre-trial detention, the repeated use of new criminal cases to prevent release, and the protection of fundamental due process rights in Bangladesh. ... @SRjudgeslawyers @amnestysasia @hrw @StateDRL @ESandersFCDO @IBAHRI @UNHumanRights @HRF @Irenekhan @PearsonElaine

Hope for Unity, Peace and Justice: The Situation of Hindus and Other Minoritised Groups in Bangladesh This important parliamentary discussion will bring together experts, journalists, parliamentarians and community representatives to examine the situation of Hindus and other minoritised groups in Bangladesh, focusing on human rights, religious freedom, democratic governance, personal security, non-discrimination and equal citizenship. The discussion will consider the experiences and concerns of Hindu communities alongside those of Christians, Buddhists, Ahmadiyya Muslims, other minority Muslim sects, Indigenous peoples, ethnic minorities, LGBT people, secular activists and other communities facing discrimination, exclusion or threats to their safety and rights. It will explore how the United Kingdom can support the protection of fundamental freedoms, strengthen democratic institutions, promote accountability and encourage the equal treatment of all citizens, regardless of religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, beliefs or background. The central question is: How can Bangladesh ensure that Hindus and all other minoritised communities enjoy equal citizenship, personal security, freedom of religion or belief, protection from discrimination and meaningful participation in public life, and what constructive role can the UK play in supporting these objectives?

A historic milestone for Bangladesh! 🇧🇩 ——— Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant’s Unit-1 has begun power start-up operations, bringing Bangladesh closer to generating its first nuclear electricity. With 1,200 MW from each of its two reactors (2,400 MW combined), Rooppur promises greater energy security, a diversified energy mix, industrial growth and reduced dependence on imported fossil fuels. Once connected to the national grid, Bangladesh will become the world’s 33rd nuclear power-producing nation. This is the realization of a visionary ambition pursued under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership. From planning to implementation, her government laid the foundation for Bangladesh to enter the nuclear energy era. A landmark achievement for Bangladesh. A legacy of ambition, vision and progress. #Bangladesh #SheikhHasina #NuclearPower

This man appears to hold radical Islamist views. Such ideologies are fundamentally opposed to women’s rights, social progress, and the broader principles of a modern, civilized society. So, it is hardly surprising that he would make statements like these. Unfortunately, Bangladesh is currently in the hands of people who hold such regressive and extremist views.
This man defends the Taliban’s brutality against Afghan women and girls. He stands with their oppressors, helps normalize their cruelty, and has the audacity to dismiss women’s voices while embracing the Taliban’s ignorance.

Former PM #SheikhHasina Submits Communication to #UN Special Rapporteurs Regarding #AwamiLeague Ban in #Bangladesh. Former Prime Minister and President of the Awami League, Sheikh Hasina, has submitted a communication to the UN Special Rapporteurs raising serious concerns about the ongoing ban of the Awami League in Bangladesh. The communication sets out how the ban, initially imposed by the #Yunus-led Interim Government, has not only been maintained but formalised by the new #BNP Government of #TariqueRahman. The BNP itself gained power in February 2026 following elections in which the Awami League was not permitted to participate, notwithstanding significant support in Bangladesh for them to do so, resulting in elections that were not free, fair or all-inclusive and calling into question the legitimacy of the results. The communication sets out how the ongoing ban places Bangladesh in the constitutionally untenable position of attempting to hold #elections and consolidate democratic government while a major political party and its affiliates remain legally prohibited from participating in elections, effectively disenfranchising a large proportion of the population of Bangladesh. It explains how it has been difficult for the Awami League to challenge the ban in the courts of Bangladesh as the ban itself and the ongoing attacks on supporters of the Awami League has made it difficult to instruct lawyers and pursue such a complaint. The ongoing ban, it is said, amounts to violations of Articles 19 (Freedom of expression), 21 (Freedom of peaceful assembly), 22 (Freedom of association), and 25 (which guarantees ‘political rights’). The communication explains how the ban is not prescribed by law as it has been imposed by a government itself in power following flawed elections, has no legitimate aim and itself forms part of ongoing attacks against members of the Awami League and those associated with it, is not proportionate and lacks safeguards. The communication calls upon the UN Special Rapporteurs to take urgent action and issue a public statement calling for free, fair and inclusive elections in Bangladesh. @sspowles KC submitted the communication on behalf of Sheikh Hasina. (The communication has been addressed to the following UN Special Rapporteurs: Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights While Countering Terrorism, Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and Association, and the Independent Expert on the Promotion of a Democratic and Equitable International Order). Brutal attack on Monsur Munna in Bhola: We demand an impartial investigation and justice. According to information received, Md. Monsur Munna, former president of the Ewazpur Union Chhatra League and a member of the Shashibhushan Thana Jubo League, was brutally beaten in Char Fasson, Bhola, on 27 October. He is admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal with serious injuries. Local BNP cadres are alleged to have carried out the attack. The Bangladesh Awami League strongly condemns this violence. We demand proper medical care and protection for Munna, a prompt and impartial investigation, and accountability for those responsible. Political affiliation can never justify violence. The state has a duty to protect every citizen’s life and safety. @UNHumanRights @amnestysasia @hrw We urge you to document and monitor this reported attack and call for accountability. #Bangladesh #HumanRights #JusticeForMunna⁩

RAMNA KALI MANDIR, 27 MARCH 1971: THE MASSACRE OF HINDU DEVOTEES AND DESTRUCTION OF A TEMPLE In the early hours of 27 March 1971, Pakistani soldiers attacked the historic Ramna Kali Mandir and the adjoining Ma Anandamoyee Ashram in Dhaka. The attack came barely two days after the Pakistan Army launched Operation Searchlight. Approximately 75 Hindu families lived in and around the temple and ashram complex. According to survivor accounts, Pakistani soldiers had visited the premises on 26 March and instructed residents not to leave. Around 2AM, the following morning, troops returned. The soldiers rounded up residents and devotees. Swami Paramananda Giri, the temple priest, was among those killed. Men, women and children were shot. Buildings were set on fire. The temple, one of Dhaka's prominent Hindu religious landmarks, was destroyed. Estimates of the number killed differ considerably. Published historical accounts report figures ranging from approximately 85 to 250 victims. The massacre left families dead, survivors displaced and a centuries-old place of worship in ruins. When Sheikh Mujibur Rahman addressed the enormous gathering at Ramna Race Course on 7 March 1971, the temple's distinctive spire was still visible. Within three weeks, the Pakistan Army had destroyed it. The temple was eventually rebuilt, but the lives lost in March 1971 could never be restored.

A Bangladeshi woman reportedly fought back against a Jamaat affiliated cleric, striking him in the face with her shoe after he allegedly sexually harassed her. She informed her family, who then intervened and detained the cleric. Since the regime change, Bangladesh is increasingly becoming a safe haven for religious extremists. Is this the Bangladesh people fought for? Women deserve safety, dignity, and justice not intimidation and harassment. Bangladesh must not become another Pakistan.

⁨📷⁩ ⁨Farmers in Bangladesh, Bled Dry by Government Manipulation, Must Stand Up The fields that smiled with golden harvests under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina now echo with loss under an illegitimate BNP government At dawn, a farmer walks his paddy field through the fog, and the soil beneath his feet is weeping. The seedlings are ready, the clouds are gathering, but he has no fertilizer. At the dealer's door he is told there is none, while sacks pile up in warehouses, waiting for the black market. Pay extra and everything appears, except a fair price. Since August 2024, Bangladesh has been walking backwards. From the illegitimate Yunus administration to today's BNP government, the chair has changed hands, but the fate of those who live by sweat has not. Potatoes that cost 15 taka a kilo to grow sell for seven or eight; city shoppers pay 30, yet the farmer gets less than half. Paddy prices have fallen by 300 to 400 taka per maund (40 kg) in a year, while seed potatoes cost nearly three times more. Debt steals his sleep; his children's schoolbook money ends up with black marketeers. This is not mere sentiment. Poverty rose from 18.7 percent in 2022 to 22.5 percent in 2026; this year alone, 2.1 million people fell into poverty, and 62 million more live one shock away from it (World Bank, October 2026). A 10 percent rise in rice prices could push another 1.4 million below the line (World Bank, August 2026). Over 15 million people already face acute food insecurity; by December that could reach 18.1 million, including 787,000 at the emergency stage, one step short of famine (UN-backed IPC, July 2026). An old word is returning to the empty autumn fields: *monga*, the seasonal hunger that once haunted rural Bangladesh. People remember a different time. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opened 10-taka bank accounts for farmers, issued agricultural input cards, and subsidised fertilizer, seed and other inputs. Solar pumps cut irrigation costs. Buying paddy directly from farmers opened a path to fair prices and loosened the grip of middlemen. The nation forgot the very word *monga*, and Bangladesh took pride in food self-sufficiency. The hands that hold the plough feed the nation. They do not ask for charity, only for what is owed. Those who use the pen or the power of office to squeeze the farmer's blood should remember: a farmer who can split the earth to grow gold can also tear out the roots of injustice. Let every village raise its voice. Let farmers stand shoulder to shoulder in every market and every field. The soil does not forgive neglect; farmers must no longer suffer in silence. The price of their sweat is theirs to claim. 'Save the farmer, save the nation.'⁩ By Roudra Rudra Political Analyst #Bangladesh #BangladeshCrisis #FoodSecurity

The State Has Abandoned Its People In a functioning country, the police rescue hostages. In BNP’s Bangladesh, families pay ransom while the state remains a spectator. A young man spends three days being tortured in the Teknaf hills. His freedom is bought for 4 lakh taka. This is not an isolated failure. It is the natural result of a government that has neither the capacity nor the will to protect its citizens. When the price of survival is measured in cash paid to criminals, governance has already collapsed. Read more: bddigest.com/news/61658/ #BangladeshCrisis #LawlessBangladesh

In just four days, Khulna has witnessed a disturbing wave of attacks on hospitals and businesses. Sandhani Clinic was vandalised and shots were fired outside; armed youths reportedly staged a show of force at New Sandhani Clinic; Queens Hospital was attacked; Suraksha Clinic faced extortion threats; and now four youths have vandalised Chinese Palace restaurant on Ahsan Ahmed Road. Doctors and coaching-centre teachers allege that extortionists are using the names of local criminals to intimidate them. Allegations of criminal activity involving individuals with links to the BNP raise further questions about political influence and accountability. Yet Khulna Sadar OC Md. Lokman Hossain says no such complaints have been filed, while reports suggest victims are too afraid to approach law enforcement. When hospitals, restaurants and businesses cannot operate safely, and police reportedly have been instructed not to patrol alone at night, law and order is in serious question. Where is the Home Minister while citizens live in fear? A government cannot evade responsibility by denying the problem. Who will protect citizens, healthcare workers and business owners when extortion and intimidation go unchecked? #Bangladesh #BangladeshCrisis #Extortion⁩
