Holy crap. It's absolutely wild how hard Zdarsky's been cooking on this book. This is a game changing issue for the Marvel U. And Valerio Schiti's art on this arc has been stunning. Hard to beat the sight of Doom riding a flaming winged horse through Hell in pursuit of Mephisto.
The only thing better than seeing Peter cut loose and demolish an opponent who richly deserves it is seeing Peter drop the jokes and show an enemy who underestimates him the kind of backbone he really possesses, and we get both in this excellent conclusion to the Ravage arc.
What really works about this run is how deeply Gail Simone has brought back the soap opera element of the X-Men. This is a book that's less about fights and power sets than it is about feelings. It is unabashedly emotional, without the buffer of snark or irony. Gorgeous art too.
Not the best Dirty Harry, but for me it's the most rewatchable. The formula was fully locked in. Just fun having Clint do his thing as Callahan one last time.
I wouldn't so far as to say CLAYFACE sucks, but it isn't particularly good, either. Super average, at best. Earns points for some gnarly gore, but that isn't enough to make its by the numbers narrative interesting. Ultimately, it's just disappointing.
If you were a kid in the '70s, In Search Of was there to scare the living shit out of you every week at, like, 5 o'clock on Sunday afternoons.
Marc scores a win, as the Mansion Ravenous arc concludes, but true to form, he only gets it by doing others dirty in the process. Jed MacKay continues to not let us forget Marc's capacity for ruthlessness. And on art, Devmalya Pramanik and Rachelle Rosenberg keep on killing it.
Strong finish to this mini, with Zdarsky teeing up his Avengers run nicely, leaving several interesting threads to pick up on, from Carol's new status, to Spidey steering towards a leadership role, to the two big surprises that close the issue. Peak Avengers incoming, I believe.
Worth remembering that the reason that Savini turned down the FX gig for Part 2 and did The Burning instead was that he thought the idea of making Jason, a character who definitively died as a child in the original, be a) alive and b) a fully grown adult in the sequel was stupid.
As an old school Friday fan, I had a ball with Crystal Lake. If some of the changes in lore are kind of wacky, that's in keeping with how this series has rolled from the moment it started churning out sequels. Thumbs up. Hope we get a second season.
Watching Sunday Night Football and finding it wild to see that Republicans spent money to run multiple national ads for the Texas election. Who knows how things will pan out in that race, but the fact that Republicans are buying national ads for a Red state contest is nuts.
There's some fun to be had here, but baffling, self sabotaging decisions ultimately undo it. When you've got a fight movie, the one thing you want to deliver on is the final boss battle you spent the whole movie building up to. Can't see audiences being too happy with this.
Kelly and Larraz keep on killing it on ASM. While I know Ravage is gonna be an ongoing menace for Peter, I hope he'll be giving this smug jerk a proper beat down in next issue's conclusion.
