The word "emoji" has nothing to do with emotion. E means picture. Moji means character. Together: picture-character. That's it. No smile, no feeling, no face. Just picture-character. The word is Japanese, because emoji came from Japan. A 25-year-old designer named Shigetaka Kurita drew the first 176 of them in 1999. He worked at a Tokyo phone company that needed a way to say more in fewer characters. He used a 12-by-12 pixel grid. He finished the set in about five weeks. Every Japanese phone maker copied it within months. When Apple added emoji to the iPhone in 2008, they matched the shapes Kurita had made familiar. That's why a heart looks like a heart, and a smile looks like that specific smile, on your phone right now. In 2016, the Museum of Modern Art in New York put his original 176 drawings into their permanent collection. Most people don't know his name. Most people don't know the word is Japanese. Most people don't know that every heart on their phone was decided in Tokyo, by a man who was 25.

“What I like doing best is Nothing,” said Christopher Robin. “How do you do Nothing?” asked Pooh, after he had wondered for a long time. “It means just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering.” “Oh!” said Pooh. ~A.A.Milne #twixtmas #DoNothing

During a Japanese night-raid on a Pacific Island, two Seabees grabbed for the same pair of pants in the dark. They both managed to get a leg in and then rushed for shelter as if they were in a three-legged race. When they dove towards different foxholes, the pants split in half. The confusion resulted in three Seabees being pantless because the contested pair of pants actually belonged to another guy. #SeaStorySaturday

Chuck Schumer just declared that canceling a host who spread disinformation about the Kirk shooting was "what Putin would do." It is a curious spin since Putin values hosts who spread false information, particularly about murders...

Trump is renaming the Dept. of Defense the Dept. of War, with Pete Hegseth becoming Secretary of War. While he’s at it, Trump should also rename the Dept. of the Treasury the Dept. of the Debt, with Scott Bessent becoming Secretary of the Debt. Both names seem more appropriate.

I took these photos at a Formula 1 event at Silverstone in 1976. Yes, you could really stand this close to the track! The blue car with four small front wheels was the Tyrrell P34.

Just. Wow. As we went over Mexico and the U.S. this morning, I caught this sprite. Sprites are TLEs or Transient Luminous Events, that happen above the clouds and are triggered by intense electrical activity in the thunderstorms below. We have a great view above the clouds, so scientists can use these types of pictures to better understand the formation, characteristics, and relationship of TLEs to thunderstorms.

"In life there are two ways of navigating: take a bearing on something in the future and steer towards it, or take a bearing on something in the past and steer away from it. There are those who look ahead and pull and those who look behind and push." ~C.R.Milne #wednesdaythought

We gave you $7.5 billion. In return, you gave us eight EV chargers. We know that you were the 27th best mayor in the nation but you should sit this one out....
If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.
