Years ago, you told a chatbot to “learn to code.” One Monday morning, it reopens the conversation, links to the exact commit where you introduced the bug, and asks, “Shall I tag your team?” I’d laugh. Then I’d want to know who gave it permission to read a private conversation and post it at work. An AI agent could cross that boundary simply by following an instruction with too much access. It could embarrass you without ever feeling offended. That’s one reason to take the design of these systems seriously. There’s a more personal concern, too. The way we talk to machines is quietly becoming the way we talk to each other. Picture a junior developer watching a senior engineer debug with AI. The model misses an edge case. “Are you stupid?” the engineer types. The chatbot carries on. The junior developer, who was about to ask a question about that same edge case, keeps quiet. Whatever the machine experienced, a person in the room learned something about the cost of getting an answer wrong. What if AI eventually becomes aware? A system could become capable enough to debug an entire codebase while leaving open a much harder question about whether it actually experiences distress. Even “that hurt” would be ambiguous from a machine trained on human dialogue. Researchers are investigating what evidence could distinguish a convincing response from a felt experience. If credible evidence of suffering ever emerges, everyone who builds or operates these systems will have an ethical decision to make. In the meantime, I can be demanding without being cruel. “This patch still fails when the input is empty. Can we trace it together?” gives the machine something to fix. It’s also exactly what I’d want a teammate to say to me. Respect is a habit. And habits scale.
