My chapbook An Eighth Man: Reflections on Migrant Workers in Japan is now available from @TokyoUtility. Inspired by John Berger, it interweaves text and photographs (by @damoncoulter) to examine the recent wave of economic migrants to Japan through the eyes of a foreign resident.

The playwright, dancer and theatre artist Akuta Masahiko has died, it was announced today. He was 80 years old. In the late 1960s, he was a member of the University of Tokyo Zenkyoto student movement. He famously invited Mishima Yukio to debate the students, which was filmed.

Inevitably there is an Adachi Masao connection, since he seemed to have interactions with everyone in the underground arts at this time. Adachi interviewed Akuta for Bijutsu Techo in late December 1970, written somewhat bizarrely as a dialogue between Judas and Jesus.

A wild scene in a Tokyo courtroom today: 「At the beginning of the trial, the presiding judge asked the defendant whether the charges against him were accurate. Instead of answering, the defendant stood up and took what appeared to be a paper Japanese national flag from an envelope-like object. "This is a Japanese national flag made in accordance with the Act on National Flag and Anthem," he declared, before tearing up two flags in quick succession. The pieces of paper scattered across the courtroom floor. He then produced a third flag, took a brown substance resembling chocolate out of his trousers, and stuffed it into his mouth. After wiping his mouth with the flag, he stated, "That's all."」 The trial was subsequently suspended for approximately 30 minutes. The man is on trial for throwing Molotov cocktails at the LDP headquarters and ramming his car into a barrier in front of the PM's residence in 2024.

Always a treat to spot your own book in the wild. The only photographer to hand was my eight-year-old daughter, whose skills with a camera seem almost as inconsistent as my ability to smile naturally.

Chiba Tetsuya’s manga portrayals of underdogs fighting against the odds gained a whole new political nuance when members of the Red Army Faction hijacked an airliner in 1970 and famously declared, “We are Tomorrow’s Joe!” (referring to Chiba’s classic eponymous manga).
Manga author Chiba Tetsuya has passed away at the age of 87. He was well-known for his political views: opposition to war, preservation of Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, and protection of freedom of expression and political dissent.

It's not my preferred way to buy books, but Tokyo Doesn't Exist is now available from Amazon. Given the spirit of artistic integrity over commercial success that the memoir is passionately championing, ordering through your local bookshop is even better! amazon.com/Tokyo-Doesnt-Exis…

Six Radical Discoveries from the 2026 BFI London Film Festival: Masao Adachi Takes a Passport Photo. "A lens into the life of a disenfranchised artist, Kamil Aljafari's camera is astoundingly collusive as it lingers on the palpable, shuffling silence of shared encounters."

My piece on Masao Adachi for Mubi Notebook: Demystifying a Legend. Labelled variously a provocateur, a radical, and a terrorist, the life and career of the iconic Japanese director is long misunderstood. mubi.com/en/notebook/posts/m…
